Woman Charged With Intimidating Jurors in Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial Pleads Not Guilty

A Massachusetts woman accused of secretly filming jurors in the high-profile Lindsay Clancy murder trial pleaded not guilty this week to a felony charge that could carry decades behind bars, even as she has gone out of her way to avoid the very cameras she is accused of pointing at others.

Dawn Light, 56, of Sutton, Massachusetts, was arraigned Wednesday in Plymouth District Court on a single count of aggravated intimidation of a juror, witness, or person furnishing information in connection with criminal proceedings. It is a serious felony charge, and one that speaks directly to the sanctity of the American jury system.

According to Massachusetts State Police, Light was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after officers found her sitting in her vehicle in a restricted section of the Plymouth County courthouse parking lot, a location that provided a clear view of the private entrance jurors use to come and go from the building.

Court officers and prosecutors say Light was recording jurors as they exited the courthouse following the fourth day of deliberations in the Clancy case. When approached by police, Light reportedly claimed she was simply hoping to catch a glimpse of Lindsay Clancy herself, not the jury.

That explanation quickly fell apart. Light consented to a search of her phone, and while officers initially found nothing incriminating, a deeper look revealed video footage of jurors leaving the courthouse tucked away in the phone’s deleted files folder. In other words, according to prosecutors, she had filmed the jurors and then tried to erase the evidence.

Assistant District Attorney Nicole Piacentini did not hold back when describing the gravity of the situation to the court. “This individual is not only videoing jurors that are coming in and out of the courthouse. She went back there to a restricted area. She was caught in that restricted area,” Piacentini said.

“The sanctity of the judicial system is at risk because of her actions,” the prosecutor added, a statement that should resonate with anyone who understands how fragile the jury system can be when outside actors attempt to interfere with deliberations in a case already drawing intense public attention.

It is worth remembering exactly what is at stake in the underlying trial. Lindsay Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, stands accused of strangling her three young children, five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan, inside the family’s Duxbury home in January 2023. She then allegedly attempted to take her own life by jumping from a bedroom window, an act that left her paralyzed from the waist down.

The case has gripped Massachusetts and the nation, with Clancy’s defense attorneys arguing that she was suffering a severe mental health breakdown tied to postpartum medication changes at the time of the killings. Prosecutors, meanwhile, have pursued murder charges, and the jury has reportedly struggled to reach a verdict, returning home deadlocked after multiple days of deliberation.

Against that emotionally charged backdrop, the presence of someone filming and photographing jurors is no small matter. It is illegal in all fifty states to record jurors during a trial or to publicly identify them, precisely because doing so opens the door to intimidation, harassment, or worse. Courts guard juror anonymity for good reason, and Plymouth County had taken specific steps to protect this jury, including a private, guarded exit.

Prosecutors requested that Light be held on fifty thousand dollars cash bail, along with an order barring her from the courthouse and from any contact with jurors or witnesses connected to the Clancy case. They also asked the court to prevent her from disseminating any photographs or video already stored on her device.

Light’s defense attorney, Jennifer White, pushed back forcefully, describing the entire episode as a “complete misunderstanding.” White noted that her client, a retired nurse with no prior criminal record, is living on a fixed income and would be unable to pay a high cash bail if one were imposed.

The judge ultimately declined to impose cash bail, instead releasing Light on personal recognizance under strict conditions. She was ordered to stay away from the courthouse grounds entirely, to have no contact with jurors or witnesses in the Clancy trial, and to refrain from sharing any of the photos or videos she had taken. She is due back in court in October.

What has struck many observers following the case is Light’s behavior since news of her arrest broke. Despite being at the center of a story now attracting national media attention, she has reportedly gone to considerable lengths to dodge reporters and cameras stationed outside the courthouse, a stark contrast to the brazen conduct prosecutors allege she engaged in while filming jurors just days earlier.

Social media users and commentators following the case have not been shy about pointing out that irony. The same woman accused of secretly recording strangers in a restricted courthouse lot now appears deeply uncomfortable being on the receiving end of public scrutiny, ducking cameras and avoiding questions from the press pool that has descended on Plymouth.
