ICE Arrests Nearly 800 in Florida in Operation With Local Officers - The New York Times

Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies teamed up in Southwest Florida last month for a sweeping immigration enforcement operation that resulted in the arrest of 500 illegal aliens in a matter of days, including a suspected Mexican cartel member, an accused child molester, and a man facing six charges related to premeditated murder.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced the results of the operation, which took place in the Fort Myers area between August 24 and August 27, describing it as a multiagency surge that brought together an unusually large coalition of federal, state and local partners in a coordinated push against illegal immigration and the criminal activity that so often accompanies it.

The scale of cooperation behind the operation is itself remarkable and reflects just how seriously Florida has taken the mission of working alongside federal immigration authorities under President Trump. ICE was joined in the operation by the Florida Highway Patrol, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida National Guard, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, along with a number of additional state and local agency partners.

That kind of broad, all hands on deck coordination between federal immigration authorities and state and local law enforcement is exactly the model conservatives have argued for years should be the national standard. Florida, under Governor Ron DeSantis, has aggressively expanded its participation in the federal 287(g) program, which allows specially trained state and local officers to carry out certain federal immigration enforcement functions themselves rather than waiting for federal agents to arrive.

ICE officials made clear that this operation was not a broad, indiscriminate sweep targeting anyone unlawfully present in the country. Those arrested included individuals with final orders of removal who had simply refused to leave the country as legally required, repeat immigration violators who had been previously deported and illegally reentered the United States, and a significant number of criminal illegal aliens with histories involving domestic violence, drug offenses, driving under the influence, assault, and other sex and violent crimes.

Among the most serious cases highlighted by ICE was the arrest of a Haitian national by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office on six separate charges connected to premeditated murder. In a separate case, ICE and the Florida Highway Patrol arrested a man identified as a Mexican cartel member, along with a Honduran national accused of molesting two children. These are precisely the kinds of dangerous individuals that supporters of aggressive immigration enforcement have long argued represent the clearest and most urgent case for removal from American communities.

Matthew Elliston, interim field office director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Miami, praised the operation as proof of what sustained cooperation between federal and state authorities can accomplish. He credited the unity and shared commitment to community safety among the partner agencies for the operation’s success, noting that more than 500 illegal aliens had been removed from Florida streets as a direct result.

Elliston did not mince words about the consequences awaiting those who continue to violate the nation’s immigration laws. He made clear that anyone who chooses to knowingly flout those laws will face real consequences, up to and including removal from the country. That message, blunt and unapologetic, reflects exactly the posture the Trump administration has taken toward immigration enforcement since returning to office, a sharp break from the more permissive approach of the prior administration.

Elliston also specifically praised the value of Florida’s 287(g) partnerships, describing them as an indispensable force multiplier for ICE’s broader mission. That characterization underscores a point conservatives have made repeatedly over the past several years, that federal immigration enforcement works far better and reaches far more dangerous criminal aliens when state and local law enforcement agencies are empowered, rather than restricted, from assisting in that mission.

The Fort Myers operation was not an isolated event. It follows a similar weeklong operation conducted in Central Florida last September that resulted in the arrest of more than 400 illegal aliens, an operation that officials at the time described as a model that could be replicated nationwide. Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin, discussing that earlier Central Florida operation, said it targeted the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens, including individuals convicted of lewd and lascivious behavior, battery, domestic violence, prostitution, vehicle theft, hit and run offenses and driving under the influence.

Taken together, these back to back large scale operations in Florida paint a clear picture of an administration and a state government that are, for the first time in years, working in genuine lockstep on immigration enforcement rather than at cross purposes. Florida has positioned itself as perhaps the single most cooperative state in the country when it comes to assisting federal immigration authorities, and the results, in terms of sheer numbers of dangerous criminal aliens taken off the streets, speak for themselves.

It is worth pausing to consider what these numbers actually represent in human terms. Every single one of the 500 people arrested in this operation represents a case where a violent criminal, a repeat immigration law violator, or someone who had already been ordered removed from the country and simply ignored that order, was allowed to remain in an American community, often for years, before finally being apprehended. The premeditated murder suspect, the alleged cartel member, and the man accused of molesting two children were all living among ordinary Floridians until this operation caught up with them.

That reality is precisely why supporters of the administration’s immigration enforcement posture argue that operations like this one are not just legally necessary but morally urgent. Every day that a violent criminal illegal alien remains unapprehended in an American community is another day that community remains at risk. The Fort Myers operation, whatever else can be said about the broader national debate over immigration policy, undeniably removed real, documented threats from Florida neighborhoods.
