The United States has temporarily paused weapons sales to Taiwan in order to ensure American munitions readiness during the Iran war, Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao told the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee. Cao said the pause was connected to making sure the U.S. has the supplies it needs for a potential escalation involving Iran.

Cao testified that the administration had conducted foreign military sales to Taiwan, but that the current pause was intended to protect U.S. readiness. He told lawmakers, “We’re doing a pause in order to make sure we have the munitions we need.” His testimony immediately raised concerns among senators worried about China’s pressure campaign against Taiwan.

Iran says it will declare an exclusion zone in the Strait of Hormuz and punish ships that pass through. Another empty threat — they cannot enforce it. Is Iran all talk on the Strait of Hormuz?

Details & Background

The pause comes amid rising tensions with China and shortly after President Donald Trump’s state visit to China, where Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly emphasized Taiwan as a red-line issue. Fox News reported that China’s Foreign Ministry said Xi warned that mishandling Taiwan could put the entire U.S.-China relationship in jeopardy.

Congress had pre-approved a $14 billion weapons package for Taiwan, but President Trump had not formally notified the package, which is a key step toward approval and delivery. Fox News reported that a bipartisan group of lawmakers had urged him to act before his China visit, but the package remained in limbo.

Reactions

Senator Mitch McConnell pressed Cao on whether the Taiwan sales would resume. Cao replied that the decision would be up to the secretary of war and the secretary of state. McConnell responded, “Well, that’s really distressing.” The exchange reflected growing concern on Capitol Hill about whether a pause could weaken deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.

Senator John Kennedy also challenged the logic of holding back weapons from Taiwan while China continues to threaten the island. Kennedy argued that arming Taiwan gives the United States leverage and stability, not war. Admiral Daryl Caudle, the Navy’s chief of operations, agreed that Taiwan would be stronger with the weapons under discussion.

Why This Matters to You

For Americans, this story is about whether the United States has enough military capacity to defend its own forces, support allies, and deter adversaries at the same time. The Iran war has placed new pressure on munitions planning, while China continues to treat Taiwan as a core strategic target.

The government should respond by accelerating weapons production, securing critical supply chains, and making clear that America will not allow China, Iran, or any adversary to exploit a temporary readiness review. Cao said foreign military sales will continue when the administration deems it necessary, but the broader test is whether Washington can turn policy into power.

This moment exposes the stakes of military readiness. America cannot afford empty stockpiles, confused signals, or slow production when enemies are watching. The Trump administration’s challenge is to preserve leverage, avoid unnecessary war, and keep the nation strong enough to deter every threat with urgency and purpose.
