House Democrats bungled the Ilhan Omar controversy with their anti-hate resolution.

Nearly 40 House Democrats declined to sign a letter calling for an end to the Trump administration’s federal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar, leaving some of the party’s most recognizable figures absent from an effort to defend the Minnesota congresswoman as federal authorities examine allegations involving her immigration history.

The development became public this week after a letter organized by Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington attracted signatures from 175 House Democrats, fewer than the party’s full 214-member caucus.

Among the lawmakers missing from the letter were former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland.

Their absence attracted attention because both lawmakers previously held senior leadership positions within the Democratic Party.

The letter urged the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security to halt an investigation involving Omar’s immigration paperwork and citizenship history.

Federal authorities have been examining whether inaccurate information was submitted in connection with Omar’s entry into the United States as a refugee or her subsequent naturalization.

The investigation escalated October 12, when federal agents executed a search warrant at Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence.

Investigators reportedly seized electronic devices, notebooks, and other materials during the search.

The operation attracted national attention because Omar is a sitting member of Congress and a prominent figure within the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.

The federal investigation concerns immigration documents associated with Omar and members of her family.

According to earlier reporting, authorities are examining possible discrepancies involving identity records and information provided during the family’s immigration process.

Omar was born in Somalia and entered the United States with her family as a refugee in the 1990s.

She became a naturalized American citizen in 2000 before beginning her political career.

Questions involving her personal history and immigration documentation have generated repeated public controversies over the years.

The current investigation is examining whether any false information was knowingly provided in connection with relevant federal immigration procedures.

Federal investigators have not publicly established that Omar committed immigration fraud.

Nevertheless, the existence of the investigation prompted Democratic lawmakers to organize a formal response directed at the Trump administration.

Jayapal led the effort to gather signatures from House Democrats.

The letter was addressed to federal officials responsible for the investigation and requested that the administration end the inquiry.

According to reporting by the New York Post and Fox News, 175 Democrats signed the document.

That left approximately 39 House Democrats who did not add their names.

The total is notable because the unsigned lawmakers represent nearly one-fifth of the Democratic caucus.

The list of absent signatories included Pelosi, one of the party’s most influential figures during her decades in Congress.

Pelosi previously served as speaker of the House and remains a prominent figure within Democratic political circles.

Hoyer, who previously served as House majority leader, also did not sign the letter.

Their absence brought attention to the fact that not every former Democratic leader participated in the public effort.
