Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. delivered one of the most talked-about speeches of the RNC Midterm Convention on Thursday night in Dallas, telling the crowd that the modern Democratic Party had betrayed the country’s founding principles. “In a single year, my party obliterated 250 years of constitutional guarantees,” Kennedy said. “The only right they left unscathed was the Second Amendment.”

Kennedy, the son of Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, spoke on the convention’s closing night, one year to the day after the assassination of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk, whose memory hung over the proceedings. “That moment would never have happened without my friend Charlie Kirk,” Kennedy told the crowd, adding that “Charlie is looking down on all of us now and … seeing the seeds that he planted.” The three-day convention in Dallas also featured speeches from Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Gov. Greg Abbott, who used their own remarks to honor Kirk and take aim at Democrats ahead of November’s midterms.

Details & Background

Kennedy, a former Democratic presidential candidate who ran against Joe Biden before eventually backing Donald Trump, used the speech to explain his political conversion. He said he came to realize that “everything that I had heard about President Trump … was a lie,” describing the president instead as “a self-effacing man of superior intelligence, of empathy and compassion, with an encyclopedic grasp of the issues.” Kennedy said he was so grateful for the country’s current direction that he thanked “God for giving our country a leader like this.”

Kennedy also took direct aim at how Democrats handled their own 2024 nomination process, arguing the party that branded itself “No Kings” had installed Kamala Harris without a contested primary. “The party of ‘No Kings’ simply anointed a queen,” he said, adding that Democrats “canceled the convention, and they held a coronation.” He argued that many of the values he grew up with in the Democratic Party, including his uncle President Kennedy’s 1960 platform of tax cuts, a strong national defense, and opposition to Communism, now belonged to the Republican Party instead.

Reactions

Kennedy’s remarks drew immediate praise from convention attendees and conservative commentators, who circulated clips of his sharpest lines throughout the night. Supporters pointed to his description of the country’s political divide as no longer being about left and right but instead, in Kennedy’s words, “about sane and insane; it was about common sense and Communism.”

Not every claim from the speech went unchallenged. Independent fact-checkers pushed back on a separate assertion Kennedy made about the health of American children, rating it false, a reminder that Kennedy’s tenure atop HHS remains a magnet for scrutiny even as his political remarks draw cheers from the Republican base. Kennedy’s own team did not immediately respond to requests to elaborate on the disputed claim.

Why This Matters to You

Kennedy’s speech matters well beyond one convention night. As HHS Secretary, he sits at the center of the administration’s health policy, from vaccine guidance to chronic disease initiatives, and his increasingly vocal alignment with Trump signals that agenda is not going anywhere ahead of the midterms.

His account of personally souring on the Democratic Party, delivered in his own words as a Kennedy, is likely to keep being used as a cross-party validator for Republican candidates this fall. Whether you are a longtime conservative or a persuadable independent, Kennedy’s speech is a preview of the argument Republicans intend to make to voters through November: that the party of JFK left long ago, and the GOP is where those old values now live. Kennedy’s speech aired alongside remarks from President Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who closed out the convention with their own tribute to Kirk, underscoring how central the slain activist’s legacy has become to the party’s 2026 messaging.
