Breaking

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, a three-star Army general and one of the Pentagon’s most senior strategic planners, over allegations that he leaked classified information to journalists about the Iran war, Russia’s war in Ukraine and other sensitive matters, a Department of War official told Fox News. Sylvia served as director of the Joint Staff’s Directorate for Strategy, Plans and Policy, known as the J5, which develops military strategy and advises the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

According to the official, Sylvia failed three polygraph examinations related to the alleged disclosures, and the investigation has been referred to the Justice Department. He is also accused of meeting reporters outside the Pentagon with the alleged intent to leak classified material, after Hegseth imposed new rules requiring journalists to be escorted inside the building. Sylvia has not been charged with any crime.

Details & Background

Sylvia took over the J5 in December after commanding the Army’s 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. A 1994 graduate of West Point, he has served for more than three decades, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he was wounded in combat. The Pentagon official said Sylvia was not a central planner of the Iran war, which falls under U.S. Central Command and its commander, Adm. Brad Cooper.

The Atlantic first reported the ouster Wednesday night, citing sources who said Hegseth had lost confidence in Sylvia amid tensions with Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby. Sources told Fox News the J5 had been sidelined since spring. Sylvia is the second J5 director removed under Hegseth, after Lt. Gen. John McGee, and Hegseth earlier removed Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims as director of the Joint Staff. Nearly two dozen generals, admirals and other senior leaders have been fired, pushed out or otherwise departed during Hegseth’s tenure, according to Fox News.

Reactions

The Pentagon has not issued an on-the-record statement explaining the firing, and the leak allegations come from an official who was not named. Fox News Digital reached out to Sylvia and the Justice Department for comment and had not received a response at the time of publication. No public statement from Sylvia defending himself had been reported as of Thursday. Officials told Fox News that military movements are underway in the Middle East to give the president options if he decides to resume strikes on Iran.

The two accounts of why Sylvia was removed differ. The Pentagon official’s explanation centers on alleged leaks and failed polygraphs, while The Atlantic’s sources pointed to a loss of confidence tied to internal policy disputes. The firing also comes as President Donald Trump keeps his options open on Iran. Asked this week about possible strikes after the midterms, Trump said, “I can’t tell you that… but anything’s possible.” He added that Tehran may be “waiting for the election or something,” which is “not going to help them.”

Why This Matters to You

Classified information about an ongoing war can reveal troop movements, battle plans and intelligence sources, putting American service members and allies in danger. If the allegations against Sylvia are proven, they would represent a serious breach of trust at the highest levels of military planning.

The timing is significant. The Pentagon is reportedly weighing renewed military action against Iran, and U.S. officials have reportedly warned Middle Eastern allies to prepare for possible strikes after the midterms. How the Justice Department handles the referral, and whether the allegations hold up, will show whether the rules protecting the nation’s secrets are enforced at every rank. For families of service members, the integrity of the chain of command is anything but abstract.
