The probe, led by independent law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, stems from a federal indictment unsealed last month charging Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA player and coach Damon Jones with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.
Rozier and Jones allegedly leaked non-public information on seven NBA games, enabling bets totaling millions, including a March 2023 Hornets game where Rozier faked an injury to cash in on “under” prop bets worth $200,000.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank confirmed the league’s cooperation with authorities, stating everyone has been fully cooperative in preserving documents and turning over devices. The Lakers specifically handed over phones from assistant trainer Mike Mancias and executive administrator Randy Mims, both close associates of LeBron James, who missed a key game due to an ankle injury shortly after becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
Billups, implicated in a Blazers-Bulls matchup where he allegedly tipped off a friend about resting key players to tank for draft position, has been placed on leave along with Rozier, with MLB suspending both indefinitely pending the probe’s outcome.
The scandal has prompted bipartisan outrage in Congress, with the House Energy and Commerce Committee sending a letter to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver demanding a briefing on the scheme’s scope, regulatory gaps, and partnerships with betting companies like DraftKings and FanDuel.
The letter highlights five key concerns, including prior unreported instances of insider betting and the NBA’s code of conduct effectiveness. Silver, appearing on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” advocated for more federal oversight, noting the patchwork of state laws creates vulnerabilities exploited by insiders.
