MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN: Bank of America VP Stabbed to Death in Times Square in Daylight Attack

The heart of New York City’s tourist district turned into a crime scene on Monday afternoon when a Bank of America vice president was stabbed to death in an unprovoked daylight attack that has once again exposed the deep dysfunction plaguing public safety in America’s largest city.

Erin Piacenti, 32, a vice president in Bank of America’s business selection and conflicts unit, was killed near West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue around 4:24 p.m. Monday. She was one of two victims stabbed by a woman wielding multiple large knives in an attack the NYPD has described as random and unprovoked.

A 68-year-old man was also stabbed in the same attack and remains in stable condition. According to police, both victims appear to have simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time, targeted for no reason other than proximity to a woman in the throes of a violent episode.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the attacker as Pamela Cisneros, a 49-year-old woman with a documented history of mental health episodes. Officers responded to a 911 call and found Cisneros brandishing two large knives. When she advanced toward officers despite being tased, they opened fire, and Cisneros was later pronounced dead.

Piacenti sustained fatal stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Bank of America confirmed her death in an internal memo and a public statement expressing shock and sorrow over the loss of a valued colleague.

This tragedy did not happen in a vacuum. Times Square sees between two hundred thousand and two hundred fifty thousand pedestrians pass through it on an average day. It is one of the most heavily trafficked, heavily policed patches of real estate in the entire country. If a woman with a known history of mental health crises can walk into that environment armed with multiple knives and kill someone before police can stop her, it raises serious and uncomfortable questions about how this city handles individuals who have repeatedly come to the attention of law enforcement.

Commissioner Tisch noted that while Cisneros had no criminal record, she had multiple prior police interactions tied to mental health episodes. That detail alone should trouble anyone who has watched New York’s approach to public safety over the past several years. A pattern of documented episodes did not translate into the kind of intervention that might have kept a knife-wielding woman off the streets of Times Square.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the attack in a press briefing, confirming that a woman carrying multiple large knives had stabbed two people before police intervened. Given Mamdani’s soft-on-crime record and his history of downplaying concerns about public disorder, many New Yorkers will rightly question whether his administration’s priorities have contributed to an environment where dangerous individuals slip through the cracks until tragedy strikes.

Bank of America’s Manhattan offices sit just steps from Times Square at One Bryant Park, a reminder that this was not some distant, isolated incident but violence erupting in the immediate vicinity of one of the largest financial institutions in the country, in the middle of a weekday afternoon.

This is not an isolated data point either. The stabbing comes just weeks after Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges connected to his cold-blooded assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a Manhattan street in December of 2024. It also follows the shooting death of a senior Blackstone executive last summer, when a gunman armed with an assault rifle walked into a midtown office lobby and opened fire.

Taken together, these incidents paint a disturbing picture. New York’s corporate and financial class, the very engine of the city’s economy, is increasingly finding itself targeted or caught in the crossfire of random and ideologically motivated violence. Executives who once considered midtown Manhattan among the safest business districts in the world are now confronting a very different reality.

Conservatives have warned for years that policies emphasizing decriminalization, reduced bail requirements, and a hands off approach to mental health crises on the streets would eventually produce tragic outcomes. This attack fits a pattern that has played out again and again in cities that have deprioritized aggressive intervention for individuals exhibiting clear warning signs.

It is worth asking directly why a woman with a documented history of mental health episodes was still free to walk the streets of Manhattan carrying multiple knives. In a city with the resources of New York, there is no excuse for a system that repeatedly encounters someone in crisis and simply lets her go each time until she finally hurts someone.

The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is continuing to investigate the shooting of Cisneros, standard procedure any time officers use lethal force. Early accounts suggest officers attempted to subdue her with a taser before resorting to firearms, indicating they followed a reasonable escalation of force given the immediate threat she posed.

Bank of America employees and executives across the country are undoubtedly shaken by the loss of a colleague in such a senseless and preventable act of violence. Piacenti’s death serves as a grim reminder that even a routine walk through one of the most photographed and heavily patrolled areas on earth offers no guarantee of safety in today’s New York City.
