1: Trump’s State Department Moves to Require Parents to Prove Citizenship for Child Passports

New draft guidance would end the honor-system checkbox and require documented proof before a child gets a U.S. passport.

The State Department is drafting a rule requiring parents to submit proof of their own citizenship or immigration status — a passport, birth certificate, green card, or I-94 form — before their child can get a U.S. passport, implementing Trump’s Aug. 6 executive order targeting “birth tourism.” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said “President Trump has been unequivocal that this Administration will protect the meaning and value of American citizenship, full stop.” A federal judge reviewing a related legal challenge has already called the underlying order “unprecedented.”

Iran says it will declare an exclusion zone in the Strait of Hormuz and punish ships that pass through. Another empty threat — they cannot enforce it. Is Iran all talk on the Strait of Hormuz?

Why It Matters to You: If finalized, the rule adds a new documentation hurdle for every parent applying for a child’s first passport — not just birth-tourism cases — and marks Trump’s second attempt at curbing birthright citizenship after the Supreme Court struck down his broader 2025 order in June. 2: DHS Secretary Mullin Touts 2,100 Arrests in New York’s “Operation Rotten Apple”

The monthlong sweep across NYC, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley wrapped Aug. 29 as Mullin renewed his attack on the state’s sanctuary policies.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced that Operation Rotten Apple, a monthlong ICE sweep, resulted in more than 2,100 arrests, saying it targeted “the worst criminals” in the state. Mullin argued the operation was necessary because New York City has “a liberal, socialist mayor” in Zohran Mamdani who tried to cut the NYPD’s budget and refused to cooperate with federal agents, while Gov. Kathy Hochul “refuses to work with us.”

Why It Matters to You: Mullin says the administration will keep sending federal agents into New York as long as local officials refuse to restore 287(g) partnerships — meaning more large-scale operations are likely as the sanctuary-policy fight escalates ahead of the midterms. Read more →

3: Newsom Poised to Sign Bill Making Two Islamic Holidays Official California State Holidays

AB 2017 cleared the Legislature 64-1 and would let schools close for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha — but critics say the law treats Islam differently than Christianity.

Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to sign AB 2017, a bill from Assemblymember Matt Haney (D-San Francisco) that formally recognizes Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as California state holidays, letting public schools and colleges close and state workers use paid leave to observe them. CAIR-California’s Oussama Mokeddem called it “a meaningful step toward ensuring Muslim students can celebrate Eid with the same dignity, respect, and accommodation afforded to other faith communities,” while the California Family Council’s Greg Burt countered that “no California statute authorizes public schools to hold exercises celebrating the meaning of Christmas, Easter or Good Friday. The asymmetry is written into the law.”

Why It Matters to You: The bill also directs the State Board of Education to build an optional Eid curriculum guide for schools — lawmakers already softened the language from “celebrating” to “exploring the history of” after pushback. Newsom has until mid-October to sign or veto. Read more →

4: Schumer Introduces Bill to Block Trump’s New 50% Tariffs on Canada

The largely symbolic measure targets tariffs on hockey sticks, cement, honey and dozens of other Canadian goods after trade talks with Ottawa collapsed.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is introducing legislation to halt President Trump’s newly imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods, arguing Republicans are “failing to stand up to Trump while Americans are crying out for cost-of-living relief.” The tariffs, which took effect Aug. 23 after negotiations collapsed, hit everything from hockey sticks and wine to honey and cameras; Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said “Washington’s final demands went too far.”

Why It Matters to You: The bill is unlikely to survive a Republican-controlled Congress or a presidential veto, but it’s part of a broader Democratic affordability push ahead of the midterms — and Canada is already set to hit back with its own retaliatory tariffs starting Sept. 8. Read more →

5: Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee Moves to Rename Nashville Airport After Dolly Parton

Days after the country icon’s death, Lee wants her name on the gateway to Music City – but a two-year waiting rule stands in the way.

Gov. Bill Lee announced Friday that Nashville International Airport should be renamed for Dolly Parton, just days after the country music icon died Aug. 25 at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer. “At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world,” Lee said, “it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.” More than 164,000 people have signed a petition backing the move, and Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell called it “a wonderful idea.”

Why It Matters to You: The airport’s own naming policy requires honorees to be deceased for at least two years, so officials will have to revisit their rules at a Sept. 17 authority meeting before Parton’s name can go up. It’s a rare moment of near-unanimous, bipartisan goodwill in an otherwise divided political year. Read more →
