A whistleblower from within New York Attorney General Letitia James’ own office has met with federal investigators, according to multiple reports, adding a serious new dimension to allegations that James’ office was weaponized against President Trump and his allies.

Daniel Wiesenfeld, an assistant attorney general assigned to James’ Investor Protection Bureau, spent several hours last week with both criminal and civil attorneys from the FBI and the Department of Justice, discussing claims he first raised in an internal email late last month.

Iran says it will declare an exclusion zone in the Strait of Hormuz and punish ships that pass through. Another empty threat — they cannot enforce it. Is Iran all talk on the Strait of Hormuz?

The episode began when Wiesenfeld, a former Brooklyn prosecutor, sent an email to roughly 2,000 colleagues across the attorney general’s office. In it, he alleged that his bureau chief, Shamiso Maswoswe, had directed him to “find and pursue crimes” committed by individuals and organizations tied to President Trump, without what he described as a credible basis for targeting them.

According to reporting from the Times Union, Wiesenfeld’s email named specific targets, including Trump himself, his Truth Social platform, and a Hewlett Packard merger the Justice Department had already approved. He said he had been told to build cases against these targets before any evidence of wrongdoing had even been identified.

The email did not stay up for long. It was deleted from the office’s internal servers almost immediately after being sent, though not before it had already reached the inboxes of hundreds of staffers, ensuring that word of its contents would spread regardless of the deletion.

Wiesenfeld reportedly followed up with a second message urging his colleagues not to serve as personal legal enforcers for James against her political opponents. He argued that the office should prosecute actual crimes and hold wrongdoers accountable rather than pick a target first and search for a crime afterward.

One line from his original message has drawn particular attention. Wiesenfeld reportedly wrote that anyone troubled by the idea of Trump using Justice Department attorneys to go after his enemies should be equally troubled to see James allegedly doing the very same thing from her perch in Albany.

That comparison lands with obvious force given how James has spent much of the past several years positioning herself as a check on Trump’s conduct. She built her national profile substantially on the civil fraud case she brought against Trump, which at one point produced a judgment against him exceeding 400 million dollars before an appeals court found the penalty excessive, even as it upheld the underlying findings.

James has also joined numerous multistate lawsuits challenging Trump administration policies since he returned to office, casting herself as a guardian against what she describes as executive overreach. A credible internal allegation that her own office was simultaneously running reverse-engineered investigations against Trump allies would cut directly against that carefully cultivated image.

James’ office has offered a muted response, according to people familiar with internal communications, characterizing the matter as an internal personnel issue and insisting no one in the office was in any danger. That kind of low-key damage control response is typical when an agency wants to avoid amplifying a story rather than confronting it directly.

The timing adds another layer of complexity, given that James herself has been under mounting legal pressure from the Trump Justice Department. She was indicted last year in the Eastern District of Virginia on bank fraud and false statement charges related to a property purchase, a case a federal judge later dismissed after determining it had been brought by an improperly appointed United States attorney. A subsequent grand jury declined to reindict her on those same charges.

More recently, Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte referred additional allegations to the Justice Department, this time involving suspected homeowners insurance fraud tied to properties connected to James. Those referrals have been sent to federal prosecutors in Florida and reportedly Illinois for review, and separate reporting indicates the department has also opened an early-stage inquiry into financial transactions between James and her longtime hairdresser.

Patriots have seen an obvious pattern forming: a sitting attorney general who spent years building a national brand chasing Trump through the courts is now facing credible internal allegations that her own staff was directed to do exactly what she has spent years accusing the president of doing to his opponents.
