Senator John Kennedy is calling on Congress to come together to address what he described as a worsening suicide crisis among young adults, warning that the issue is being overlooked even as families across America continue to suffer devastating losses. In an op-ed highlighted by his office, Kennedy said suicide has become the second leading cause of death for Americans ages 10 to 24, a statistic he said should shock the nation into action.

Kennedy wrote that the headlines of the day can cause Americans to miss one of the most serious challenges facing local communities. “Almost every community in America has a heartbreaking story to tell about how they have lost a young man or woman with bottomless potential to suicide,” Kennedy said. “Sadly, the epidemic of young adult suicide is only getting worse.”

Details & Background

At the center of Kennedy’s proposal is the Improving Mental Health Access for Students Act, a bipartisan measure introduced with Senator Cory Booker. The bill would require colleges and universities to print the 988 number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline on student identification cards, making emergency mental health help visible to students every day.

Kennedy acknowledged that government cannot fix every source of pain facing young Americans, including academic pressure, social isolation, family struggles, and spiritual despair. But he argued that Congress can take a simple step to ensure that every college student knows there is a confidential, free counselor available when they feel trapped, overwhelmed, or alone.

Reactions

Kennedy’s message was not framed as a partisan fight, but as a national responsibility. His office emphasized that the goal is to give students immediate access to a crisis resource before tragedy strikes. The legislation is designed to place the 988 number directly in students’ hands, where it can serve as a lifeline during moments of emotional distress, substance abuse, or mental health crisis.

In the op-ed, Kennedy put the weight of the crisis in personal terms. “Every young American has the potential to change our country for the better,” he wrote. “It makes me sick to think that 2 percent of our young people have reached a place of such hopelessness that they’ve considered harming themselves.” Kennedy said the country must do more to ensure students understand the role they play in America’s future.

Why This Matters to You

For parents, grandparents, teachers, pastors, and neighbors, Kennedy’s warning lands close to home. The suicide crisis among young people is not an abstract policy debate. It is a kitchen-table issue, a school issue, a church issue, and a community issue. Families often do not see the signs until the danger is already severe, which is why simple access to help can matter.

The government cannot replace parents, faith, friendship, or strong communities. But it can remove barriers to lifesaving help. By requiring colleges to display the 988 number on student identification cards, Congress would make sure students do not have to search for help in a moment of panic. Kennedy’s message is urgent and practical: America should not lose another young life because help was available but unknown.
