Was Noah's Ark found in Turkey? Rooms and a tunnel discovered beneath a mysterious structure – Zamin.uz, 27.09.2026

An international team of researchers investigating a mysterious boat-shaped formation in eastern Turkey has recovered pieces of charred wood from nearly 30 feet beneath the surface, a development that could provide new evidence in the decades-long search for the possible remains of Noah’s Ark.

The discovery was announced following archaeological and geological investigations at the Durupınar formation near Mount Ararat, a location that has attracted international attention because of its resemblance to a massive ancient vessel.

Researchers emphasize that the recovered material has not been scientifically connected to Noah’s Ark, but the discovery provides new physical samples for laboratory testing.

The wood has reportedly been sent for radiocarbon dating and species identification, procedures that could help establish its age and provide additional information about the environment in which it was deposited.

The latest development follows months of fieldwork involving archaeologists, geologists, engineers, and other specialists from several countries.

The research team conducted extensive ground-penetrating radar surveys, three-dimensional mapping, and drilling operations at the site during the summer and early fall of 2026.

Their work culminated in an October symposium where researchers presented preliminary findings from the investigation.

Professor Cenker Atila of Sivas Cumhuriyet University, the archaeological professor overseeing the officially permitted project, announced the recovery of wood from deep within the formation.

According to the research team’s October 27 announcement, pieces of charred or burned wood were recovered at a depth approaching 30 feet.

The material is now undergoing scientific examination to determine its age and composition.

The researchers have cautioned that no definitive conclusions should be drawn until the laboratory results have been completed and independently evaluated.

The discovery is significant to the project’s investigators because the Durupınar formation has long been debated as a possible location associated with the biblical account of Noah’s Ark.

The formation was first identified in 1959 by Turkish Army Captain İlhan Durupınar, whose name was subsequently given to the site.

Situated in eastern Turkey near the mountains associated with Ararat, the formation resembles the outline of an elongated vessel when viewed from above.

Its reported length is approximately 157 meters, or 515 feet.

That measurement has attracted interest because the biblical account describes Noah constructing an enormous ark to preserve his family and representatives of animal life during a catastrophic flood.

Genesis 6 describes the ark as measuring 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.

Depending on the ancient cubit measurement used, those dimensions describe a vessel of considerable size.

Supporters of the Durupınar hypothesis have pointed to the formation’s elongated outline and dimensions as reasons for continued investigation.

However, shape and approximate dimensions alone cannot establish that the formation was constructed by humans.

Previous geological studies have interpreted the site as a natural formation resulting from geological processes.

The latest research project seeks to examine those explanations through physical sampling and subsurface mapping.

During the 2026 field season, the team drilled 16 core holes, including 12 inside the formation and four outside it.

Some of the holes reached depths of approximately 20 meters, or 66 feet.

Researchers collected more than 360 samples for laboratory examination.

The samples include soil and other material that may help investigators understand the formation’s internal structure and geological history.

The team also employed ground-penetrating radar to identify subsurface features.

Researchers reported radar anomalies that they interpret as possible organized patterns, chambers, or corridor-like structures beneath the surface.

Those interpretations remain preliminary because radar anomalies can result from natural variations in soil, rock, moisture, and other underground materials.

The project has attracted interest from scientists in Turkey, the United States, Slovakia, Australia, and Brazil.

Andrew Jones, associated with the Noah’s Ark Scans research effort, previously described the team’s commitment to gathering physical evidence rather than relying exclusively on visual similarities.

Speaking during the October research period, Jones acknowledged that scientific analysis remained incomplete.

He stated, “We still have the lab work to do.”

That statement underscores the importance of determining what the recovered materials actually are before assigning them a historical or biblical significance.

Radiocarbon dating may help establish the age of suitable organic samples, although the reliability of the results will depend on contamination controls, the material’s condition, and laboratory procedures.

Species identification could provide further clues about the type of wood recovered and whether the material is consistent with vegetation historically present in the region.

The depth of the discovery is another factor researchers intend to examine.

Wood recovered from deep underground may have been buried through a range of natural or human processes, and burial depth alone does not establish its age.

The site’s location near Mount Ararat has given the investigation special importance among people interested in biblical archaeology.

In the Book of Genesis, the ark is described as coming to rest on the mountains of Ararat after floodwaters subsided.

The biblical wording refers to mountains rather than specifically identifying the modern peak known as Mount Ararat.

The region has nevertheless been associated with Noah’s Ark traditions for centuries.
