Chaos erupted at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on December 13, 2025, when a shooter dressed in black opened fire inside the Barus and Holley building, home to the School of Engineering and Physics Department, during a final exam review session for a principles of economics class.
The attack killed two students and wounded nine others, with seven in critical but stable condition and one in critical condition as of Sunday morning.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed the victims were all students, calling it a “tragic day” as law enforcement swarmed the campus, locking down buildings and neighborhoods for hours.

The gunman fled the scene, prompting a massive manhunt with over 400 officers, including FBI agents, searching streets and buildings late into the night.
A person of interest was detained early Sunday at a Hampton Inn hotel in Coventry, about 20 miles from campus, after cellphone data geolocated him, with one firearm recovered equipped with a laser sight. Surveillance video released by Providence police showed the suspect, described as a male in his 30s wearing dark clothing, walking away from the area.
The shelter-in-place order was lifted Sunday morning, but classes, exams, and projects for the fall semester were canceled.
