Rep. Ilhan Omar is facing explosive allegations from a former Somaliland government minister who claims she shared details of a congressional meeting with Somali officials and urged them to move against Somaliland before it could strengthen ties with Washington.

Ali Hassan Mohamed, Somaliland’s former minister of information, alleges that Omar passed along the information during a December 2022 trip to Garowe. He claims she encouraged Somali leaders to strike first—and says the alleged disclosure contributed to a conflict that left hundreds dead and thousands displaced.

According to Mohamed, the information involved a meeting between Somaliland’s president and the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where Omar was serving at the time.

The accusation is raising questions about what Omar may have shared with foreign officials and whether information entrusted to a member of Congress was used to benefit leaders overseas.

Mohamed first made the allegation in a January 2024 post on X. The claim resurfaced over the weekend and spread across social media, where conservative commentators called for answers and urged federal authorities to look into the matter.

Some critics have gone further, accusing Omar of putting foreign interests ahead of American interests. But Mohamed has not publicly presented documents, recordings or witnesses establishing that Omar shared the information or that her alleged conduct caused the violence.

The account that helped revive the post, which uses the name Republic of Somaliland, has also been described by Somaliland’s Foreign Ministry as an unofficial government channel.

The details matter. Congressional committees handle a wide range of information, and not every meeting involves classified material. Investigators would need to establish what was shared, whether it was protected and who received it.

Mohamed’s allegation comes against the backdrop of a decades-long dispute over Somaliland’s status.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has governed itself for decades, though it lacks broad international recognition. Somalia maintains that Somaliland remains part of its territory.

That dispute has made Somaliland’s outreach to Washington a sensitive issue. Any move toward closer ties with the United States has the potential to draw a strong reaction from officials who oppose its independence.

Fighting erupted in the Las Anod region in early 2023. Hundreds were killed and thousands displaced, but tensions had already been building before the violence began.

Mohamed claims Omar’s alleged disclosure helped fuel the conflict. Establishing that connection would require evidence showing what was said and how it influenced the actions of those involved.

Omar was removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in a House vote in February 2023, the same month the fighting broke out. The timing alone does not establish a connection between the two events.

No public response from Omar’s office to this specific allegation appeared in the reporting reviewed for the original draft.

The questions are straightforward: What was discussed in Garowe? Did Omar share details of the congressional meeting? Who received the information, and was any of it protected?

Members of Congress hold positions of public trust, particularly when they serve on committees dealing with foreign affairs and national security. If protected information was improperly shared, Americans deserve to know.
