Macklemore made the remarks during a September 4 performance, including the declaration, “Free Palestine.”

His statements soon produced objections from organizations and individuals who argued that his rhetoric crossed lines surrounding Israel and antisemitism.

Macklemore was subsequently removed from Sheeran’s Loop tour.

Sheeran, however, has disputed the suggestion that he personally ordered Macklemore off the tour.

Reuters reported that Sheeran said the decision was not his and was connected to tour organizers and pressure surrounding stadium venues.

Sheeran also indicated that he wanted his concerts to remain politically neutral.

That position did not prevent the controversy from widening.

Finneas, Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe withdrew from the tour after Macklemore’s removal.

Beoga, an Irish folk band that has performed as part of Sheeran’s touring operation, also pulled out.

The departures transformed what began as a dispute over one opening performer into a larger argument over political speech in the entertainment industry.

Several of the withdrawing artists publicly framed their decisions around solidarity with Macklemore and the Palestinian cause.

Others raised questions about whether wealthy individuals, advocacy organizations or venue operators should be able to affect the political speech of touring musicians.

One of the names appearing in the controversy is New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose business interests include Gillette Stadium.

Reporting on the dispute said venue pressure was among the factors affecting Macklemore’s continued participation in the tour.

Sheeran has consequently found himself between competing demands.

One side argues that performers should speak openly about Gaza and the treatment of Palestinians.

Another side has objected to rhetoric associated with Macklemore, including criticism connected to allegations of antisemitism surrounding previous incidents.

Singer Pink was among the public figures who criticized Macklemore’s rhetoric, according to Reuters.

Others, including Greta Thunberg and Colin Kaepernick, supported Macklemore.

Macklemore has also announced a $1 million donation for Palestinian relief.

For Sheeran, the conflict complicates his attempt to keep political disputes away from his concerts.

His critics argue that declining to take a public position is itself consequential when other performers believe an issue requires public opposition or support.

Sheeran’s position, as reported, is more specific than simply refusing to “make a stand.” He has said Macklemore’s removal was not his decision and has expressed support for peace while maintaining that he does not want his performances converted into political events.
