A Wall Street Journal investigation published September 4 found that Senator John Fetterman shirked basic Senate duties, citing more than a dozen former staffers and internal texts. The report found Fetterman skipped 11 of 12 full committee hearings during one stretch, and that after he learned senators could check in and leave, he had aides make sure clerks noticed his arrival so he could, in the Journal’s words, “get credit for attending even though he only drifted into the room for a minute or less.”

The investigation also detailed how Fetterman canceled a meeting with three paralyzed military veterans after telling staff he was too ill to attend — then appeared at his office that same day for a Fox News interview about Israel and the war in Iran. He later acknowledged the conflict directly, telling CNN, “It was my intention to meet with the group. Prior to the meeting I was at home throwing up.”

We need your opinion
Iran says it will declare an exclusion zone in the Strait of Hormuz and punish ships that pass through. Another empty threat — they cannot enforce it. Is Iran all talk on the Strait of Hormuz?

Details & Background

The Journal reported that when informed the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia wanted to discuss Medicaid cuts, Fetterman allegedly responded, “Why do I have to keep having to meet with chop,” and suggested the hospital’s representatives “just want free trips to DC.” Separately, when told a formal funeral for three police officers near his hometown would run three hours, he reportedly said, “3 hours?? This may be a nonstarter.”

A former senior aide summed up the pattern to the Journal: “You can have policy disagreements, but at least do the 101 basics of being a representative in a representative government.” Staff also reportedly blocked Fetterman from publishing an op-ed built on “points the ambassador sent over” from Israel’s ambassador, Yechiel Leiter, over concerns it could run afoul of the Foreign Agents Registration Act — a detail that raised its own questions about how closely his office was coordinating with a foreign government’s talking points. The Journal’s report drew on interviews with more than a dozen former staffers, along with internal text messages, painting a consistent picture across multiple years of Fetterman’s term rather than a single isolated incident. That breadth is part of why the story landed so hard even among Democrats who have otherwise defended Fetterman through his very public health struggles.

Reactions

Fellow Pennsylvania Democrats didn’t wait to weigh in. Rep. Brendan Boyle said flatly, “John Fetterman is a disgrace…Our state deserves better,” while Rep. Chris Deluzio called the pattern “laziness, disrespect, and willingness to carry water for a foreign government.” Former Rep. Conor Lamb went furthest, saying, “John, if there is a decent bone left in your body, just quit.”

Fetterman pushed back hard in a statement to CNN on September 6, dismissing the report as “lies, half-truths, innuendos, smears and anonymous” sourcing, and insisting, “No matter how many smears or stories, I’m proud to continue to deliver for Pennsylvania.” On the CHOP comment specifically, he called it a “dumb joke, and for that, I sincerely apologize,” adding that his office has “always have, and always will, advocate for CHOP.” Former staffers, meanwhile, launched a public account on September 6 promising more revelations.

Why This Matters to You

Senators are paid roughly $174,000 a year by taxpayers to show up, hold hearings, and meet with the people they represent — not to game attendance systems for credit they didn’t earn. When it’s members of a senator’s own party, from his own state, calling the behavior a “disgrace,” that’s a signal worth taking seriously regardless of which side of the aisle you’re on.

This story also matters because it’s unfolding just two months before the midterms, when Pennsylvania voters will be weighing whether their elected officials are actually doing the job. Whether Fetterman’s explanation of “smears” holds up or the former staffers’ promised follow-up lands harder, this is a fight inside the Democratic Party that isn’t going away quietly, and it puts a spotlight on a broader question voters in both parties are asking: how much oversight is actually happening once someone gets elected to Washington.
