The U.S. Navy’s guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance (DDG-111) first detected the Touska transiting at 17 knots toward the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas.

Over a six-hour period, the ship ignored repeated radio warnings to stop and turn back.

When it continued its attempt to violate the blockade, Spruance fired several rounds from its 5-inch MK 45 gun directly into the vessel’s engine room, disabling its propulsion without causing casualties.

U.S. Marines then fast-roped from helicopters onto the disabled ship, taking full custody.

Central Command (CENTCOM) released video footage showing the warnings, the precise gunfire, and the boarding operation.

President Trump posted on Truth Social: “The Iranian crew refused to listen, so our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineroom.

Right now, US Marines have custody of the vessel, and are seeing what’s on board!”

He noted that the Touska was already under longstanding U.S. sanctions for prior illicit activity.

This marks the first direct use of lethal force since the current naval blockade began on April 13, 2026.

The blockade was imposed after the collapse of high-level negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, where the U.S. demanded a permanent end to Iran’s uranium enrichment and removal of its highly enriched uranium stockpile.

Earlier in the week, the Navy had already forced at least 13 ships to turn back, but the Touska became the first to require disabling fire.

The incident follows a chaotic few days in the Strait of Hormuz crisis.

On Friday, April 17, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared the strait “completely open” to commercial traffic during the fragile ceasefire.

President Trump welcomed the move but immediately clarified that the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports would remain “in full force” until a comprehensive deal is finalized — with no sanctions relief, no cash payments, and zero enrichment allowed going forward.

Less than 24 hours later, on Saturday, April 18, Iran reversed course.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reasserted full military control over the strait, firing on at least two commercial vessels (including an Indian-flagged tanker) and declaring it closed until the U.S. lifts its blockade.

Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf called the American action “clumsy and ignorant,” while hardliners criticized the brief reopening as weakness.

The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most vital energy chokepoint — just 21 miles wide at its narrowest point and responsible for roughly one-fifth (about 20%) of global oil supplies plus a significant share of liquefied natural gas.

Disruptions here have historically spiked energy prices worldwide.

Iran has repeatedly threatened to weaponize the strait, mining sections earlier in the 2026 crisis and harassing tankers as retaliation for U.S. and Israeli strikes that degraded its nuclear facilities.

Trump has warned repeatedly that the current ceasefire could expire as early as this week if no deal is reached, and “we will start dropping bombs again.”

He has emphasized that American forces are not only enforcing the blockade but stand ready to help remove buried enriched uranium from bombed Iranian nuclear sites under any final agreement.

This swift, professional operation by the USS Spruance and U.S. Marines highlights the overwhelming superiority of the U.S. Navy and the effectiveness of Trump’s maximum pressure strategy.

The failed Obama-Biden JCPOA showered Iran with cash and emboldened its nuclear program and terror proxies.

In stark contrast, Trump’s combination of crushing sanctions, targeted military actions, and now a tight naval blockade has left the regime economically squeezed, internally divided, and with few viable options.

Iran’s IRGC quickly condemned the seizure as “piracy” and vowed retaliation, but the regime’s bluster rings hollow as its economy reels and its ability to project power diminishes.

Global oil markets showed some volatility in response, yet Trump’s decisive leadership has so far prevented a broader crisis.

The American people can take pride in knowing their military is actively defending U.S. interests, protecting freedom of navigation in international waters, and denying the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism its favorite tool of economic blackmail — all without committing ground troops to another endless Middle East conflict.
