DeSantis: Florida ICE Sweep Nets 500 Arrests, Including Accused Murderers and Sex Offenders

A four-day immigration enforcement surge across Southwest Florida ended with 500 arrests, federal and state officials announced. Gov. Ron DeSantis said the group taken into custody included “subjects accused or convicted of premeditated murder, sexual abuse of minors, domestic violence.”

The operation, carried out Aug. 24-27 in the Fort Myers area, brought together U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Florida Highway Patrol, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida National Guard, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, among other agencies, operating under the federal 287(g) program that lets state and local officers assist ICE directly.

According to ICE, those arrested included people with final removal orders as well as criminal histories involving domestic violence, drug offenses, DUIs, assault and violent or sexual crimes. Officials pointed to a Haitian national facing six charges related to premeditated murder, a Mexican national identified as a cartel member, and a Honduran national accused of molesting two children as among the most serious cases. Other named arrests included Noe Lux Castro, 24, of Guatemala, accused of resisting officers and grabbing a trooper’s Taser; Rigoberto Vargas-Resendiz, 52, of Mexico, who had illegally reentered the country three times despite a 2011 removal order; and Armando Coc-Yat, 39, also of Guatemala, who was already under a 2021 removal order and had prior DUI and hit-and-run arrests on his record.

Florida’s director of immigration enforcement, Anthony Coker, said the operation “showcase[d] the importance of federal, state and local law enforcement working together,” while ICE interim field office director Matthew Elliston separately called the results “a testament to the power of unity” among the many agencies involved, noting that all 67 Florida county sheriffs now participate in similar 287(g) partnerships. Communities from Fort Myers to Estero reported visible ICE activity throughout the four days, including one arrest captured on video outside a Lee Health medical facility, an encounter that circulated widely online and became one of the most visible flashpoints of the entire operation.

Reactions

The operation followed days of visible tension in Lee County, where dozens of protesters gathered outside a downtown Fort Myers hotel after word spread that ICE agents were staying there. Organizer James Abraham told WINK News the protest was aimed at what he called overly aggressive tactics: “we are against what ICE has been doing, just basically laying siege to whole communities. And these communities consist of our neighbors.”

Fellow protester Gordie Daig went further, framing the enforcement activity as part of a broader erosion of democratic norms: “The continued behavior that we allow to happen in this country right now is just bizarre … we’ve lost the checks and balances of our democracy, it’s just hurtful to watch as an American. It’s embarrassing.” Neither DeSantis’s office nor ICE directly addressed the Fort Myers protest in touting the operation’s results.
