For nearly a decade, the corporate press has painted Donald Trump as a cold, vindictive figure incapable of basic human decency. That narrative took another hit this weekend when Pennsylvania Democrat Senator John Fetterman and veteran broadcaster Greta Van Susteren both shared personal, firsthand accounts of the president’s quiet generosity, stories that had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with character.

The clip, which began circulating widely on social media Saturday, showed Fetterman recounting a moment that clearly still moves him. His father has been dealing with a serious heart condition, and according to Fetterman, Trump reached out privately to check on him. There was no press release, no photo opportunity, and no political angle. Fetterman said the president simply called to see how his father was doing.

Van Susteren, who has covered Trump for decades going back to his days as a New York businessman, offered her own story about the same theme: a side of Trump that rarely makes it into the daily news cycle. The Fox News and Newsmax veteran has interviewed the president on multiple occasions over the years, and her comments carried the weight of someone who has watched him up close far longer than most of his current critics.

What makes this moment notable is not simply that kind of story about Trump exists. It is who told them. Fetterman is not a MAGA loyalist. He is a sitting Democrat senator who ran against Trump’s agenda and has clashed with him plenty of times in public. Yet Fetterman has increasingly broken from his own party’s script when it comes to acknowledging basic facts about the president’s conduct, even as it costs him standing among progressive activists.

This is not the first time Fetterman has spoken warmly of his dealings with Trump. After a widely publicized meeting at Mar-a-Lago in January 2025, Fetterman told the hosts of The View that the president was kind and cordial during their conversation, which lasted over an hour. He described it as a straightforward, unscripted exchange, not the kind of stage-managed photo op his colleagues assumed it would be.

Trump reciprocated the goodwill at the time, telling the Washington Examiner that he found Fetterman to be a commonsense person who did not fit neatly into either political tribe. It was a striking exchange given that Trump had previously attacked Fetterman during the 2022 midterms, at one point falsely suggesting the senator’s past struggles were tied to drug use. Politics can produce strange turns, and this was one of them.

More recently, Fetterman drew attention again during a presidential address to Congress when he stood and applauded honorees that many of his fellow Democrats refused to acknowledge. He clapped for the family of Iryna Zarutska, the Ukrainian woman murdered on a Charlotte light rail train, and for a Korean War veteran receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor. He also pushed back on attacks aimed at Erika Kirk, the widow of assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk, asking why simple kindness toward a grieving widow had become controversial in his own party.

Fetterman has been blunt about where he thinks his party has gone wrong. During a NewsNation town hall last fall, he stated plainly that Trump voters are not Nazis or fascists, a rebuke of the kind of overheated rhetoric that has become common among Democrat activists and some of his colleagues in the Senate. He noted that he grew up in a conservative part of Pennsylvania and is the only Democrat in his family, giving him a perspective that many coastal Democrats simply do not have.

None of this means Fetterman has abandoned his party or his policy positions. He has continued to spar with Republicans on various issues and has not shied away from criticizing Trump when he believes it is warranted. But his willingness to publicly credit the president for personal decency, even while remaining a Democrat, stands in sharp contrast to a media environment that treats any positive statement about Trump as a scandal requiring explanation.

The reaction online after the Fetterman and Van Susteren clip surfaced was telling. Conservative commentators pointed out the irony of a Democrat senator offering a more honest account of Trump’s character than most of the political press has managed in years. Others noted that stories like these rarely make front-page headlines, while every controversy, real or manufactured, gets wall-to-wall coverage.

This is not the first time stories of Trump’s private generosity have surfaced and later been confirmed. In 2014, Trump sent a personal check for twenty-five thousand dollars to Marine veteran Andrew Tahmooressi after his release from a Mexican prison, along with a handwritten letter praising his service and sacrifice. Tahmooressi’s mother later confirmed the gesture directly to fact checkers, and the letter was reproduced in her son’s memoir. It was a private act that only became public because the family chose to share it.

It is worth noting that not every viral story about Trump’s supposed kindness has held up under scrutiny. A widely shared list of anecdotes from 2020 mixed accurate stories with at least one long debunked urban legend involving a stranded motorist. Fact checkers have rightly separated fact from fiction in the past, and skepticism toward viral claims is healthy. But the Fetterman and Van Susteren accounts are different in kind. These are not recycled internet legends. They are direct, on-camera statements from named individuals with reputations to protect, describing events they personally experienced.

That distinction matters. Van Susteren has spent decades as a serious journalist, first at Fox News and later at Newsmax and Voice of America, interviewing Trump on policy matters ranging from trade to foreign affairs. She is not a partisan cheerleader by trade, which makes her willingness to share a personal anecdote about Trump’s character carry additional weight.

The broader point here is not that Trump is a saint or that his critics have no legitimate grievances. It is that the media’s relentless portrayal of him as uniquely cruel or heartless simply does not match the accounts of people who have interacted with him directly, including political opponents who have no incentive to flatter him.

Fetterman himself seemed to acknowledge this tension in his comments, noting that a relatively small share of Democrats currently express pride in being American, a reflection he tied to the toxic political climate rather than to Trump specifically. He said his own patriotism does not depend on who occupies the White House or which party controls Congress, a sentiment that stood out precisely because it broke from the constant outrage that defines so much of the current political discourse.

Unhinged Left has dismissed Fetterman’s comments as naive or as evidence that he has drifted too close to Trump’s orbit. Some of his former staffers have expressed frustration with his willingness to praise the president even in small, personal ways. But Fetterman has shrugged off those criticisms before, dismissing comparisons to other Democrats who eventually switched parties and insisting he has no plans to do the same.

For conservatives who have long argued that the mainstream media flattens Trump into a one-dimensional caricature, moments like this offer a small but meaningful correction. A Democrat senator and a veteran television journalist, neither of whom owes Trump anything politically, chose to speak publicly about a side of him that rarely gets airtime. That alone is worth noting in an era when so much political coverage seems designed to reinforce existing narratives rather than challenge them.
