On Thursday, October 15, 2026, a quiet elementary school in Bend, Oregon, became the scene of unspeakable horror. A 16-year-old gunman killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School before it ended in minutes. The man who ended it was a 36-year-old father who did not wait outside for help to arrive.

His name is Kaylub Giamanco, and he is the father of two girls who attend Silver Rail. Police say he retrieved a legally secured .40-caliber pistol from his vehicle, followed the gunman into the building, and shot him dead. His family has described a man who acted on instinct to protect other people’s children.

The timeline is chilling. Around 12:58 p.m. Pacific time, police say the gunman tossed a shotgun over the school fence and climbed onto the campus. The driver of a red pickup truck on a nearby street spotted him and confronted him from the vehicle, and the teen fired on the truck, striking it at least three times.

Giamanco saw the gunman and understood immediately that something was terribly wrong. According to his mother, Kenda Freeman, he pulled onto the grass, grabbed his gun and went after the shooter. She told reporters her son went into the school after the gunman, and she said he crawled through a window the shooter had already shot out.

The gunman had already blasted through the glass panes of exterior double doors and entered a classroom. Police say the classroom was a special needs classroom, among the most vulnerable places in any school building. Investigators estimate the shooter fired as many as 15 rounds during the attack.

Inside, another act of courage was unfolding. A teacher threw her cellphone at the attacker, tackled him, and fought to take away his shotgun. Her fight came at a critical moment, and she has been hailed alongside the father for preventing further tragedy.

When Giamanco reached the gunman, he fired multiple times and struck him, ending the threat. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the father killed the suspect with a pistol that had been legally secured in his vehicle. Investigators say the gunman still had about 44 rounds left when he was stopped.

Think about what that number means. A shooter carrying that much ammunition inside a classroom full of small children could have caused a catastrophe far worse than the one the community is now grieving. The father and the teacher have been hailed for preventing further tragedy, and the pickup driver also tried to stop the attack.

When police arrived minutes later, they found the shooter dead and four victims inside the school. The dead were three boys, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher, identified as Megan Lambert. Two others were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

One of them, a 7-year-old girl, received lifesaving care in the classroom itself and was later reported in serious but stable condition at Oregon Health and Science University. A 54-year-old female teacher also suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and was treated at St. Charles Bend hospital. Every one of those names represents a family changed forever.

The shooter was a former student at Silver Rail who had previously attended the school as a special education student and was no longer enrolled in the district. He lived in Bend. Authorities have not yet explained how he obtained the weapon, and his mother declined to comment on that question.

Questions about security are already swirling. The district superintendent said it is not yet clear why the gunman was able to bypass the school’s security measures. That question will almost certainly drive hearings and policy debates in the weeks ahead.

For Giamanco’s family, the days since have been a blur of shock and pride. His mother said he called her shortly afterward and told her that a man had gone into his daughter’s school and shot kids, and that he had shot and killed him. She said she told her son he was a hero, and that he did what he had to do.

Freeman described her son as a man with a genuine heart who loves his community, his family and his children. A fundraiser has been set up to support the family as they cope with the aftermath. Taking a life, even to stop a killer, leaves its own heavy mark.

The story has reignited a familiar national argument. Gun rights advocates point to this case as proof of what they have long said: that the quickest way to stop a violent attacker is a law-abiding citizen willing and able to act. In this case the shooter was stopped by an armed parent and a brave teacher well before additional responders could have made a difference.
