Elon Musk Offered CNN Stake Amid Trump Press Ban

Elon Musk may be on the verge of owning part of two of the biggest news brands in America. According to a Semafor report published September 23, Paramount executives have discussed asking the billionaire to join the group of equity investors backing the company’s takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent of CNN.

Before the rumor mill runs wild, an important correction is in order. No investment has been announced, and the idea of Musk putting in $1 billion that is circulating online is not supported by the reporting. The size of any potential Musk investment could not be determined, Paramount declined to comment, and Musk did not respond to requests for comment.

The $1 billion figure has a real source, but it is a different deal. Oracle founder Larry Ellison, the father of Paramount CEO David Ellison, invested $1 billion in Musk’s 2022 purchase of Twitter, now called X. Ellison also invested in Tesla in 2018 and served on the Tesla board for years.

That history is why the idea makes sense to insiders. Musk and the Ellison family have a long record of backing each other’s big bets, and Larry Ellison is the financial backbone of the Paramount deal. He has personally guaranteed more than $40 billion of the equity financing.

The deal itself is enormous. Paramount Skydance is acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery for $31 a share in cash, which amounts to roughly $81 billion in equity and about $110 billion once debt is included.

If the transaction closes, the combined company would hold CBS and CNN along with Paramount Pictures, the Warner Bros. studio, HBO, HBO Max, Paramount+ and a long list of cable networks. A Musk stake would therefore reach two newsrooms at once, even though he would not be buying either directly.

Reporting has been careful on that point. The talks concern an equity investment in Paramount, not a purchase of either news organization, and the Semafor story described no editorial role for Musk. Even Semafor’s own analysis said it was unlikely he would have formal input into operations.

There are also structural limits on what any investor would get. Paramount has reportedly weighed a non-voting arrangement that would in theory insulate editorial operations from investor pressure, and the sovereign wealth funds already involved in the financing are not expected to take board seats or governance rights.

Part of the legal path to the merger also included promises about newsroom independence. Paramount settled with California Attorney General Rob Bonta and other state officials by agreeing to create independent editorial boards for both CBS News and CNN. The company has not said how much power those boards will actually have.

Paramount also agreed not to sell its Paramount Studios and Warner Bros. lots in California for at least five years, and to spend an additional $1.5 billion on domestic production over five years, according to the settlement terms reported by the press.

For years, a large share of the country has argued that the legacy networks lean left in what they choose to cover and how they cover it. Trust in the traditional press has sunk, and viewers have drifted toward outlets and platforms that treat them as adults who can weigh the facts for themselves.

That is a market verdict, and it is the kind conservatives have long defended. When customers walk away from a product, the owners are free to change it, and new capital is free to move in. Ownership changing hands in a free economy is how stale institutions get a chance to reinvent themselves.

CBS News is already changing under the Ellison family. David Ellison tapped Bari Weiss as editor in chief of CBS News, and she is expected to run CNN as well once the merger is complete. Her supporters say an outsider’s eye is precisely what a newsroom set in its ways needs.

Musk’s own record is the strongest argument for the idea. Since buying Twitter, he has reshaped the platform around a more open speech policy and slimmed it down. Admirers say X is leaner, more transparent and far friendlier to dissenting views than the old Twitter, and that is the kind of thinking many viewers would like to see applied to cable news.

Free speech is the principle at stake. The First Amendment protects the press from the government, and it equally protects the right of private owners and investors to put their money into media and shape its direction. A marketplace of ideas works best when more voices, not fewer, have a seat at the table.

Accountability matters too. A news organization should answer to its audience and to the truth, not to a narrow cultural consensus in a few zip codes. The editorial boards promised in the California settlement will be tested the first time a politically sensitive story lands, and viewers will be watching.

Meanwhile, the deal itself is moving. Reports in late September said Paramount was preparing to close the Warner Bros. Discovery merger within weeks after settling the lawsuit that had threatened to derail it, so the investor lineup could be finalized soon.
