Eighty House Republicans voted for a measure that would have cut nearly $482 million from NATO-related military funding and redirected the money to American military bases. The amendment, offered by Rep. Greg Steube of Florida, was considered as part of a wider military construction and veterans affairs funding bill.

The measure failed in the House by a vote of 333 to 80, but every vote in favor came from Republicans. According to the Washington Examiner, 127 Republicans joined 205 Democrats and Rep. Kevin Kiley, an independent who caucuses with Republicans, to defeat the amendment.

Details & Background

The proposal would have shifted exactly $481,832,000 from the NATO Security Investment Program into military construction projects at U.S. bases. The NATO Security Investment Program is funded by all 32 NATO member countries and supports shared infrastructure and digital projects across the alliance. The United States and Germany are among the largest contributors.

Supporters framed the vote as a question of whether American taxpayer dollars should be prioritized at home. Steube wrote on X, “The U.S. keeps footing the bill for NATO while some of these countries refuse to fully back America when it actually matters.” He added, “Taxpayers should not be subsidizing ‘allies’ who expect our protection but won’t show up for us.”

Reactions

Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, who voted for the measure, also criticized the current NATO burden on the United States. He said, “We sit here and defend them all, and then we get into a bind, and they just run for cover.” Burchett added, “Yet, we’ve got all our military out there, all in their countries, protecting them. I’m kind of sick of it. We need to start looking after the good old US of A.”

The vote came amid renewed criticism from President Donald Trump and members of his administration toward NATO countries. The Washington Examiner reported that Trump had criticized NATO members for refusing to help with the Iran war and for denying U.S. use of bases in the Middle East. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News, “When you have NATO partners denying you the use of those bases, then what’s the purpose of the alliance?”

Why This Matters to You

For American families and taxpayers, the NATO funding vote raises a direct question: how much should the United States continue paying for overseas alliance infrastructure while military needs remain at home? Supporters of the amendment argued that the money would be better spent on U.S. bases, where service members and military families would see the impact more directly.

The government’s response now remains in Congress, where lawmakers must keep deciding how to balance alliance commitments with domestic defense priorities. The failed amendment does not end the debate. Instead, it shows that a large group of House Republicans is willing to challenge long-standing assumptions about NATO spending, foreign commitments, and whether American military dollars should first serve American military readiness.
