White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made her return from maternity leave and immediately stepped into the controversy surrounding President Donald Trump’s renovation effort at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The U.S. Sun reported that Leavitt had largely been out of the public spotlight since welcoming her second child with her husband, Nicholas Riccio, before returning to defend the administration’s handling of the project.

The controversy centers on the Trump administration’s work to restore the famous Washington landmark ahead of America’s 250th Independence Day celebration. Critics have focused on problems reported at the site, including algae-filled water, peeling sealant, and damage around the pool. Leavitt, appearing on Fox News, argued that the administration is not dealing with an imaginary problem, but a serious case of vandalism against federal property.

Details & Background

The Reflecting Pool has long been one of the most recognizable symbols of the nation’s capital, sitting between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. President Trump has repeatedly emphasized the need to preserve and beautify major national landmarks, especially as the country prepares for its 250th birthday. The restoration effort was meant to renew the site and improve its appearance for Americans and visitors from around the world.

According to The U.S. Sun, the project has faced criticism after the newly renovated pool reportedly developed algae problems and sections of the new coating began peeling. The president said vandals caused damage to the pool, including what he described as a long gash that may require the water to be drained and the site repaired again. He also said newly placed grass near the area was damaged, tying the episode to broader concerns about disrespect for public property and national monuments.

Reactions

Leavitt pushed back directly after Minnesota Governor Tim Walz mocked the administration’s handling of the project online. Walz accused the Trump administration of creating what he called an imaginary problem and turning it into a failed project. Leavitt rejected that characterization, saying, “The vandalism is very real, despite what Tim Walz wants to say: ‘It’s an imaginary problem.’ No, it is not. It’s a very real problem.”

Leavitt said she had spoken with the National Park Service before her television appearance and stated that 17 police reports had been filed in a matter of days. She also said there had been six arrests at the Reflecting Pool and described the suspects as “deranged individuals” who had been “vandalizing and desecrating our federal monument.” President Trump also warned that destruction or attempted destruction of such property can carry serious consequences, saying a 10-year prison sentence could be fully enforced.

Why This Matters to You

For many Americans, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is not just a tourist stop. It is part of the national memory, tied to presidents, veterans, civil rights history, and generations of families who have visited Washington to see the symbols of the republic. When public monuments are damaged, neglected, or mocked for political reasons, the loss is felt far beyond the capital.

The government should respond by protecting federal property, holding vandals accountable, and completing restoration work with urgency and care. Leavitt’s return showed that the Trump White House intends to defend the project, answer its critics, and keep the focus on preserving America’s landmarks. At a time when respect for national symbols is often treated as optional, the Reflecting Pool fight has become a reminder that protecting the country also means protecting the places that tell its story.
