On the night of Feb. 24 in Washington, President Donald J. Trump concluded his State of the Union address with a solemn tribute to two American service members awarded the nation’s highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor.
Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 Eric Slover, still on active duty, was recognized for his actions during a January mission in Venezuela. Retired Navy Capt. Royce Williams, now 100 years old, received the medal for extraordinary heroism during a 1952 aerial battle in the Korean War. The ceremony brought members of Congress to their feet as the decorations were presented inside the House chamber.

Details & Background
In early January, President Trump announced the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro following a successful overnight joint U.S. military mission in Caracas. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores de Maduro, were taken into custody during the Jan. 2 raid and now face criminal court proceedings tied to a prior federal indictment, including charges of narco-terrorism and drug trafficking.
Slover played a central role in that mission. According to Trump, Slover planned and led a helicopter operation involving a CH-47 Chinook. “Slover planned a mission and was the flight lead in the cockpit of the first helicopter,” Trump said. As the aircraft approached Maduro’s heavily fortified compound, thousands of enemy soldiers guarded the area.
While descending under cover of darkness, Slover’s helicopter came under intense fire. “While preparing to land, enemy machine guns fired from every angle, and Eric was hit very badly in the leg and hip — one bullet after another,” Trump recounted. Despite absorbing four gunshot wounds that severely damaged his leg, Slover continued flying. “The success of the entire mission and the lives of his fellow warriors hinged on Eric’s ability to take searing pain,” the president added.
After maneuvering the aircraft so onboard gunners could neutralize threats and safely delivering commandos to the drop zone, Slover handed control to his wounded copilot. Army Lt. Gen. Jonathan Braga, commander of Joint Special Operations Command, placed the Medal of Honor around Slover’s neck during the address. Trump announced a separate White House ceremony would also be held.
Williams’ recognition came nearly 75 years after his heroic combat mission. During the Korean War in 1952, Williams’ squadron was ambushed by seven Soviet fighter planes during blizzard conditions. “In the skies over Korea in 1952, Royce was in the dog fight of a lifetime — a legendary dog fight,” Trump said. Though heavily outnumbered, Williams shot down four enemy aircraft while sustaining 263 bullet strikes to his own plane and suffering serious injuries.
For decades, the mission remained classified. Williams did not publicly discuss it, even with his wife. “But tonight, at 100 years old, this brave Navy captain is finally getting the recognition he deserves,” Trump said. First Lady Melania Trump placed the medal around Williams’ neck to sustained applause.
The president also honored Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Scott Ruskan, credited with saving more than 160 lives during flooding in central Texas and awarded the Legion of Merit. Additionally, Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe were recognized with Purple Hearts after being shot while on patrol in Washington on Nov. 26, 2025. Beckstrom received the honor posthumously, with her parents accepting the medal. Wolfe, who recovered from his injuries, attended in person.
Reactions
Lawmakers from both parties stood in recognition as the honorees were introduced. The chamber, often divided by partisan debate, appeared unified during the tribute to the service members.
Military leaders and veterans’ groups praised the recognition of valor spanning generations. Commentary on X described the ceremony as a powerful reminder of sacrifice. Supporters noted that Slover’s actions ensured the success of a high-risk operation, while Williams’ long-delayed honor corrected what many viewed as a historic oversight.
Why This Matters to You
The Medal of Honor represents the highest acknowledgment of courage under fire. By highlighting these acts during the State of the Union, the administration placed national security and military service at the forefront of the evening’s message.
The federal government bears responsibility not only for directing military operations but also for ensuring that extraordinary bravery is recognized. Honoring Slover underscores the risks undertaken in modern counter-narcotics and counter-terror missions abroad. Recognizing Williams affirms that valor, even when classified for decades, will not be forgotten.
For American families with loved ones in uniform, such moments signal that sacrifice is seen and remembered. They also reinforce the principle that the nation stands behind those who defend it — whether on battlefields of the past or in high-risk missions of the present. In a divided political climate, the recognition of courage serves as a reminder of the shared values that continue to define the country.
