Republican Tennessee Representative Tim Burchett is accusing what he calls the “deep state” of obstructing efforts to release government information about unidentified flying objects and unidentified anomalous phenomena, commonly known as UFOs and UAPs. Burchett said he recently participated in a high-level meeting at the Pentagon that continued for more than two hours, although he declined to identify the officials present or reveal the classified matters discussed.

Speaking during an appearance on the “Planet Tyrus” podcast, Burchett presented the meeting as evidence that the disclosure debate is active at senior levels of government. “I had a meeting at the Pentagon this week on the issue, a very high-level meeting,” Burchett said. “I’m not at liberty to say who was there and what was, but I was there over two hours if that tells you anything.” He then made his central allegation: “The disclosure is real. And the problem we’re having right now is the deep state is blocking a lot of this.”

Details & Background

Burchett has spent years pressing the military and intelligence community to provide Congress with more information about UAP sightings, alleged recovery programs and reports submitted by pilots and service members. He helped establish a congressional UAP caucus and previously joined other lawmakers in seeking information related to whistleblower testimony. His congressional office has also argued that the Pentagon suffers from an overclassification problem that keeps both lawmakers and citizens from understanding how federal agencies operate and spend public money.

The Department of Defense maintains the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, or AARO, to investigate unidentified phenomena near national security locations and reduce the risk of technological or intelligence surprise. Official Pentagon reports have documented hundreds of UAP submissions, although many cases have been attributed to ordinary objects, atmospheric conditions, sensor issues or misidentification. AARO has said its historical review found no verified evidence that a government investigation confirmed extraterrestrial technology, a conclusion that remains disputed by Burchett and other disclosure advocates.

Reactions

Burchett said he has spoken with pilots and military personnel who witnessed unexplained objects but feared that reporting the encounters could damage their careers. According to the congressman, some service members destroyed footage rather than face lengthy questioning, psychological evaluations or removal from flight duties. He argued that such treatment discourages witnesses from providing useful information and allows government agencies to avoid confronting incidents that may involve unknown aircraft, advanced foreign technology or other national security threats.

The Tennessee Republican also described an encounter in which a staff member allegedly suggested that even the president could be restricted by “need-to-know” rules. “I’m in a security hearing, and a little punk with a man bun tells me that the president’s on a need-to-know basis,” Burchett said. “Now, what world am I living in?” He characterized Washington’s secrecy as a product of institutional power, control and arrogance. His remarks represent his own assessment, and the publicly available reports do not independently establish that a coordinated “deep state” operation is concealing proof of extraterrestrial activity.

Why This Matters to You

The central issue is whether federal agencies are accountable to the elected officials who oversee them. Information about advanced objects operating near military installations, nuclear facilities or American aircraft could involve serious defense and aviation risks even when extraterrestrial explanations are never confirmed. Citizens have a legitimate interest in knowing whether those incidents are being investigated competently, whether service members can report them without retaliation and whether Congress receives the information needed to make national security decisions.

The Trump administration has moved toward releasing additional UAP records, including military infrared footage and files concerning reported objects near sensitive facilities. That process must balance transparency with the protection of intelligence methods, weapons capabilities and military personnel. The government should establish clear declassification standards, protect credible whistleblowers, punish unauthorized concealment and provide Congress with meaningful access to relevant programs. Whatever the unexplained objects ultimately prove to be, no permanent bureaucracy should be permitted to place itself beyond constitutional oversight or decide on its own what the American people and their elected president are allowed to know.
