The Democratic Socialists of America scored another major primary victory, deepening the Democrat Party’s internal fight over its future. According to Fox News, DSA-backed Melat Kiros defeated Democratic Representative Diana DeGette in Colorado’s First Congressional District, a deep-blue Denver-based seat. DeGette had served in Congress for decades, while Kiros entered the race as a first-time candidate and former attorney.

The victory marks the third major recent win for DSA-aligned candidates against establishment Democrats. Fox News reported that Kiros’ win followed victories by Darializa Avila Chevalier, who defeated Democratic Representative Adriano Espaillat in New York City, and Claire Valdez, another DSA-aligned candidate who won a primary to succeed retiring Representative Nydia Velázquez. Together, the results have emboldened the far left as it pushes beyond New York and into other Democrat strongholds.

Details & Background

The latest upset came in a district that Democrats have long considered safe territory. Fox News reported that Colorado’s First Congressional District is anchored in Denver and was carried overwhelmingly by Kamala Harris in the last presidential race. That political environment made the primary the central contest, allowing the ideological fight inside the Democrat Party to become the real battle for the seat.

The Democratic Socialists of America celebrated the result openly, writing, “Another Democratic Socialist is going to Congress!” The group also said Kiros would fight to “Abolish ICE, free Palestine, and win Universal Childcare and Medicare for All.” That statement put the stakes in plain view: the victory was not marketed as a moderate Democrat win, but as part of a national socialist push aimed at immigration enforcement, foreign policy, health care, and the role of government in everyday life.

Reactions

Hasan Piker, a far-left streamer who attended Kiros’ primary night event in Denver, told Fox News, “I think progressive politics, left populism, a politics that centers the needs of the working class, can work in every district, in every state. That’s why I kept saying over and over again, it’s coming to a city near you.” His comment reflected the confidence now spreading through the progressive wing after a string of high-profile primary wins.

Republicans quickly framed the results as evidence that Democrats are drifting further left. In Colorado’s Eighth Congressional District, State Representative Manny Rutinel also won a Democratic primary and will face Republican Representative Gabe Evans. Evans blasted his opponent as “a far-left, radical socialist, Mamdani-wanna-be extremist” and accused Democrats of choosing someone who supports policies harmful to law enforcement, energy, farmers, ranchers, and the broader economy.

Why This Matters to You

The rise of DSA-backed candidates matters because these primary victories are not isolated symbolic wins. They represent a growing attempt to move the Democrat Party away from traditional liberal politics and toward a more aggressive socialist agenda. When candidates and allied organizations openly promote abolishing ICE, expanding government-run programs, and reshaping America’s relationship with law enforcement and the border, the consequences reach every taxpayer, family, community, and local economy.

The government should be responding with seriousness by defending immigration enforcement, protecting public safety, preserving economic freedom, and making clear that America’s institutions cannot be handed over to activists pushing ideological experiments. These races show that the far left is no longer waiting outside the Democrat Party; it is winning inside it. The urgency now is that voters and leaders understand exactly what is being built before these policies move from campaign slogans into federal power.
