Sen. Lindsey Graham, the longtime Republican senator from South Carolina, has died at the age of 71 after what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness.” His office announced his passing early Sunday, asking for privacy for his family and expressing appreciation for the prayers and support they have received during this difficult time. No additional details regarding the cause of death were immediately released.

Graham had served in the U.S. Senate since 2003 after first winning election in 2002. Before joining the Senate, he represented South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives and served as an attorney in the U.S. Air Force. Over more than three decades in Congress, Graham became one of the Republican Party’s most influential lawmakers, particularly on matters involving national security, the military, judicial confirmations, and foreign affairs.

Throughout his Senate career, Graham chaired several high-profile committees and played a prominent role in shaping Republican policy. He was closely involved in confirming federal judges, debating major national security legislation, and advocating for a strong American presence abroad. In recent years, he remained an outspoken supporter of military assistance to allies including Ukraine and Israel.

Graham’s political career evolved over time. Although he was initially a vocal critic of Donald Trump during the 2016 Republican presidential primary, the two later developed a close working relationship. Graham became one of Trump’s most trusted allies in the Senate, advising the president on domestic and foreign policy issues while defending many of the administration’s legislative priorities.

President Donald Trump was among the first national leaders to respond publicly to the news. In a statement, Trump called Graham “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known,” describing him as a close friend and praising his years of public service. Trump also noted that the two had spoken shortly before Graham’s death and said the senator had mentioned feeling “a little tired” after returning from overseas travel.

Additional reactions from elected officials and world leaders are expected as news of Graham’s death continues to spread throughout Washington and abroad.

Graham’s death creates an immediate vacancy in South Carolina’s representation in the U.S. Senate. Under South Carolina law, Gov. Henry McMaster is expected to appoint an interim senator who will serve until a special election is held to fill the remainder of the term. The appointment process is expected to begin in the coming days.

Beyond its political implications, Graham’s passing marks the conclusion of one of the longest-serving Republican careers in modern Congress. For more than 30 years, he remained a prominent voice on some of the nation’s most consequential issues, making his sudden death a significant moment in American political history.
