States Rally Behind Kennedy’s Health Revolution

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Friday that states will be granted waivers to ban soda from the federal food stamp program. This marks the beginning of Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda finally taking concrete action against the corporate interests that have been poisoning our families for decades.

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said at a lectern emblazoned with a “MAHA Starts Here” sign that his state would be the first to request federal waivers blocking food stamp recipients from purchasing sodas with taxpayer-funded benefits. Calley Means, a White House senior adviser, said Kennedy is discussing proposals to ban soda in SNAP with more than 15 governors, showing the nationwide momentum behind this common-sense reform that puts American health before corporate profits.

The support is spreading rapidly across Republican-led states. In December, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) announced she would seek permission to prohibit using SNAP for “junk food.” Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican, signed legislation Thursday to request a waiver to prohibit soft drinks in the program. This shows that Republican governors understand that taxpayer money should be used to nourish families, not enrich corporations that are making Americans sick and dependent.

Kennedy Compares Big Soda to Big Tobacco

Secretary Kennedy isn’t pulling punches in his fight against corporate America’s assault on public health. He said sugar was “just as addictive as crack and almost as bad for you.” He compared soda companies to the formerly dominant tobacco companies and said they are pressuring governors to back off from efforts to ban the drinks from the SNAP program. This is exactly the kind of fearless leadership Americans voted for when they chose the Trump-Kennedy alliance.

“They are telling them that they are going to stop writing checks, that they are going to run people against them, that they are going to destroy their political careers,” Mr. Kennedy said. The corporate bullying tactics are being exposed for what they are – attempts to keep Americans sick and dependent while big corporations rake in profits from government subsidies. Kennedy’s willingness to call out these tactics shows he’s not afraid to take on the corporate establishment that has captured so many politicians.

The comparison to Big Tobacco is particularly apt. Just as tobacco companies spent decades lying about the health effects of their products while buying off politicians, Big Soda has used the same playbook. Kennedy has been most vocal, calling for the government to stop allowing the nearly $113 billion program that serves about 42 million Americans to use benefits to pay for “soda or processed foods.” This represents a fundamental shift away from corporate-friendly policies toward policies that actually serve American families.

Congressional Support Builds for National Ban

The momentum is building beyond just state-level action. Congress is trying to force sugary foods out of SNAP programs nationwide through new legislation. Rep. Josh Brecheen, Oklahoma Republican, introduced legislation that would prevent food stamps from being used to purchase soda, candy, ice cream and other sugary treats. This represents a bipartisan recognition that taxpayer money should not subsidize the companies making Americans fatter and sicker.

“I urge every Governor to follow West Virginia’s lead and submit a waiver to the USDA to remove soda from SNAP,” Kennedy said in a statement. “If there’s one thing we can agree on, it should be eliminating taxpayer-funded soda subsidies for lower income kids. I look forward to inviting every Governor who submits a waiver to come celebrate with me at the White House this fall.” This invitation shows that the Trump administration is serious about rewarding governors who put American health before corporate interests.

The legislative momentum is building at multiple levels. Bills are pending in Congress and in several states to restrict SNAP benefits from paying for soda, candy and other items. What makes this different from past efforts is that now there’s real leadership at the top pushing for these changes, rather than corporate-captured bureaucrats who have blocked reform for decades.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins Backs the Fight

The Trump administration is united in this battle. “When a taxpayer is putting money into SNAP, are they OK with us using their tax dollars to feed really bad food and sugary drinks to children who perhaps need something more nutritious?” Rollins said. This administration is finally asking the tough questions that establishment politicians have avoided for decades while Americans got sicker and corporations got richer.

Ms. Rollins said: “Gov. Morrisey is a visionary, and willing to cut through the D.C. noise to help families move toward healthier behaviors and healthier outcomes. I look forward to receiving Gov. Morrisey’s SNAP pilot request and will work swiftly to make certain West Virginia is equipped with the technical assistance and expertise to move forward.” This shows the coordination between HHS and USDA that’s necessary to actually implement these reforms, rather than the bureaucratic foot-dragging that has blocked change in the past.

The fact that Agriculture Secretary Rollins is on board is crucial because Mr. Kennedy’s department does not oversee the SNAP program. It falls under the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Having both secretaries working together shows this isn’t just political theater – this is a serious effort to reform a system that has been captured by corporate interests for far too long.
