Republicans Demand Zohran Mamdani’s Deportation, Urge Trump to Use Communist Control Act

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) has ignited a firestorm, leading Republican calls to deport Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic socialist frontrunner in New York City’s 2025 mayoral race, after his June 25 primary win over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

In a blistering June 26 letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Ogles demanded the DOJ investigate whether Mamdani, a naturalized U.S. citizen, obtained citizenship in 2018 through “willful misrepresentation” by concealing alleged ties to terrorism. Citing a 2017 rap song where Mamdani, under the name “Young Cardamom,” referenced the “Holy Land Five”—convicted in 2008 for funneling $12 million to Hamas—Ogles claimed Mamdani’s lyrics (“Free the Holy Land Five / My guys”) suggest undisclosed affiliations that could justify denaturalization.

On X, Ogles called Mamdani “little muhammad” and an “antisemitic, socialist, communist who will destroy NYC,” urging his deportation to Uganda, where Mamdani was born in 1991.

The New York Young Republican Club echoed Ogles, tagging Trump’s advisors Stephen Miller and Tom Homan in a June 26 X post, demanding Mamdani’s citizenship be revoked under the 1954 Communist Control Act, which allows stripping citizenship from those engaged in “subversive” communist activities.

Mamdani’s campaign, which pushes rent freezes, a $30 minimum wage, and ending ICE cooperation, has been labeled a Marxist threat by GOP figures like Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who posted an AI-generated image of the Statue of Liberty in a burqa.

A 2025 Heritage Foundation report brands the Democratic Socialists of America, where Mamdani is a member, a “radical threat” for advocating wealth redistribution. On X, #DeportMamdani trended, with users writing, “He’s a danger to America—Trump, send him packing!”

Mamdani, who moved to the U.S. at age 7 and represents Queens in the New York Assembly, condemned the attacks as “Islamophobic” and “fascist,” tweeting, “New York belongs to all of us, not MAGA extremists.” Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called Ogles’ rhetoric “racist,” while moderates like Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand distanced themselves, claiming Mamdani supports “global jihad.”

Legal experts, including Georgetown’s David Cole, argue the Communist Control Act’s use would violate First Amendment protections, noting its rare enforcement since the 1960s. A June 2025 Rasmussen poll shows 61% of Republicans back deporting “anti-American” officials, but Mamdani’s odds of winning the mayoral race remain strong at 3/5, per Star Sports.
