For years, Democrats and their media allies have insisted that President Trump’s return to the White House would trigger an unstoppable backlash in the 2026 midterms. Every economic headline, every foreign policy challenge, and every negative news cycle has been spun into proof that Republicans are headed for electoral disaster.

Yet one of the most liberal newspapers in America has just published polling that tells a very different story.

Iran says it will declare an exclusion zone in the Strait of Hormuz and punish ships that pass through. Another empty threat — they cannot enforce it. Is Iran all talk on the Strait of Hormuz?

A new Washington Post/Ipsos survey has Democrats leading the generic congressional ballot by just four points, 49 percent to 45 percent. For a party that has spent months promising a historic anti-Trump landslide, that number is not encouraging. It is a warning sign.

If Democrats were truly riding the massive wave their consultants keep bragging about on cable television, they would be posting double-digit advantages similar to what they enjoyed before the 2018 midterms. Instead, even with nonstop media attacks against President Trump, relentless fearmongering over tariffs, inflation, and foreign conflicts, Democrats have managed only a narrow edge.

That is a remarkable underperformance.

The poll, conducted from July 8 through July 13 among 2,648 adults, does contain difficult numbers for President Trump. His overall approval sits at 37 percent, while concerns about inflation and the economy continue to weigh heavily on voters.

Republicans should not ignore those realities. Americans want prices lower, wages stronger, and the economy moving faster. Conservatives have every reason to expect their elected leaders to keep delivering on those priorities.

But Democrats are making a far bigger mistake if they believe dissatisfaction automatically translates into support for their party.

The political establishment keeps assuming that voters unhappy with current conditions will naturally return to the same Democratic Party that helped create many of those problems in the first place. Americans remember who presided over years of inflation, reckless spending, an open southern border, soaring crime in major cities, and endless ideological battles that distracted Washington from everyday concerns.

Voters may have frustrations, but they have not forgotten recent history.

Even Democratic pollster Jay Campbell admitted that economic concerns continue driving voter anger. What he could not explain is why that anger is failing to produce the overwhelming Democratic advantage his party has been predicting for months.

The answer is fairly obvious.

Americans remain deeply skeptical that Democrats have any serious solutions beyond higher spending, bigger government, and more bureaucracy. While voters may demand better economic performance, they also recognize which party consistently fights for secure borders, law enforcement, energy independence, and fiscal restraint.

That reality becomes even clearer when looking beyond the generic ballot.

Previous Washington Post/Ipsos polling found Republicans leading Democrats on the issues Americans consistently rank as most important: the economy, immigration, and crime.

Those are not secondary issues.

Those are the issues that decide elections.

Despite years of coordinated attacks against Republican immigration policies, Americans continue trusting Republicans far more than Democrats to secure the border. After witnessing record illegal immigration under Democratic leadership, many voters simply no longer buy the Left’s narrative.

Crime tells a similar story.

Democrats spent years embracing soft-on-crime policies, demonizing police officers, and tolerating chaos in major cities. The public watched the results unfold in real time. Now, restoring law and order remains one of the GOP’s strongest political advantages.

On the economy, while voters are frustrated with current conditions, many also recognize that President Trump’s first term delivered historically low unemployment, rising wages, lower inflation, and stronger growth before the pandemic disrupted the global economy.

That record still carries weight.

Democrats were hoping economic frustration would erase those memories. So far, it has not.

History also offers another reason for Republicans to avoid panic and for Democrats to temper their celebrations.

Generic congressional ballots this far from Election Day are notoriously unreliable predictors. Political environments shift dramatically over the course of a campaign, particularly once voters begin comparing actual policy proposals instead of reacting to daily headlines.

Democrats know this better than anyone.

They entered previous election cycles expecting massive victories that ultimately failed to materialize. Pollsters, pundits, and political strategists have repeatedly overestimated Democratic enthusiasm while underestimating Republican turnout.

There is little evidence suggesting 2026 will be any different.

Perhaps the most revealing finding in the Washington Post survey is not President Trump’s approval rating.

It is the remarkable stability of his support.

Despite months of overwhelmingly negative media coverage, investigations, criticism over tariffs, attacks surrounding Iran, and constant predictions of political collapse, Trump’s approval remains virtually unchanged from April.

That suggests something Democrats continue refusing to accept.

The American people have largely tuned out the corporate media’s endless anti-Trump messaging.

After years of exaggerated narratives, selective outrage, and failed predictions, many voters have become immune to the manufactured hysteria that dominates legacy news coverage.

Every new controversy is presented as the scandal that will finally destroy Trump politically.

Every time, voters respond with a collective shrug.

The Washington Post poll does not depict a Democratic Party racing toward a landslide.

It depicts an electorate frustrated with Washington but still unwilling to place its trust in the very party responsible for many of the nation’s biggest problems.

That is a sobering reality for Democrats who have spent months predicting a blue tsunami.

For Republicans, the message is equally clear.

There is no room for complacency. Economic concerns must be addressed, campaign promises must continue to be fulfilled, and conservatives must remain focused on the issues Americans care about most.

But the Left’s fantasy of an inevitable anti-Trump wave is colliding with reality.

And even the Washington Post can no longer hide it.
