Poll: 83 Percent of Americans Back Photo ID and…

There are few issues in American politics where the public is as united as election integrity, yet Washington Democrats continue to fight one of the most widely supported voting safeguards in the country. A new national poll shows overwhelming bipartisan support for requiring proof of citizenship and government-issued photo identification before Americans register to vote or cast a ballot, exposing a growing disconnect between Democratic politicians and the very voters they claim to represent.

According to polling discussed this week on Fox News’ Special Report, 83 percent of registered voters support requiring a valid state- or federally issued photo ID proving United States citizenship before someone can register to vote. Another 77 percent support requiring photo identification before a ballot can actually be cast. Fox News anchor Bret Baier described the results as “pretty overwhelming,” and the numbers leave little room for debate.

Perhaps the most striking finding is not the overall support but where that support comes from. The survey found that 72 percent of Democrats support requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote, while 62 percent support requiring photo identification before voting. Those figures stand in direct contrast to the position of Democratic leaders in Washington, who have spent years portraying voter ID laws as discriminatory and denouncing citizenship verification requirements as voter suppression.

When nearly three-quarters of a party’s own voters support a policy that its congressional leadership continues to oppose, it raises an obvious question: Who exactly are those politicians representing?

Nor is this an isolated poll. Survey after survey has reached nearly identical conclusions, regardless of the polling organization or the wording of the questions.

A Pew Research Center survey found that 83 percent of Americans support requiring government-issued photo identification to vote, compared to just 16 percent who oppose the requirement. Even more notable, public support has increased over time, climbing from 77 percent in 2012 to 83 percent today. Rather than fading, support for voter ID has steadily strengthened as identification has become a routine part of everyday American life.

Pew’s demographic breakdown further undermines the narrative that voter ID is merely a partisan issue. The survey found support from 71 percent of Democrats, 83 percent of independents, and 76 percent of Black Americans. Those numbers challenge years of messaging from Democratic leaders who have framed voter ID laws as racially discriminatory or politically divisive.

Gallup arrived at virtually the same conclusion. Its October survey found that 84 percent of Americans favor requiring photo identification at polling places, while 83 percent support requiring proof of citizenship for first-time voter registration.

Gallup also noted that those numbers have remained remarkably consistent over several years, suggesting that support for voter identification is neither temporary nor driven by recent headlines. It has become a durable consensus among the American public.

Even Rasmussen Reports, whose polling often uses different wording, found broad agreement. Its January survey reported that 77 percent of likely voters believe requiring photo identification is “a reasonable measure to protect the integrity of elections.”

Taken together, the evidence is difficult to dismiss. Across virtually every major poll conducted over the past decade, support for voter identification consistently falls somewhere between three-quarters and five-sixths of the electorate.

That growing consensus comes as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, better known as the SAVE Act, awaits consideration in the Senate after clearing the House of Representatives.

The legislation would require documentary proof of United States citizenship when registering to vote while also requiring voters to present photo identification when casting ballots. Despite overwhelming public support, only five House Democrats voted in favor of the measure.

Once again, congressional Democrats appear far more aligned with activist organizations than with their own voters.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has denounced the legislation as “Jim Crow 2.0,” warning that it could disenfranchise millions of American citizens. That rhetoric stands in sharp contrast to polling showing that majorities of Black voters, Democratic voters, independents, and Americans overall support the very voter identification requirements Democratic leaders continue to oppose.

If the policy truly resembled the discriminatory practices of the Jim Crow era, one would expect overwhelming opposition from the communities Democrats argue would be most affected. Instead, the polling points in the opposite direction.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune seized on that contradiction, remarking that “it kind of feels like the only Americans not to support voter ID requirements are Democrats here in Congress.” Whether or not one agrees with Thune’s political framing, the polling data behind his observation has been replicated by multiple independent organizations using different methodologies over many years.

Supporters of the SAVE Act argue the reason for those numbers is straightforward. Americans already present identification for countless everyday activities, from boarding commercial flights and opening bank accounts to purchasing certain medications and completing employment paperwork.

For most voters, proving who they are before participating in an election is not viewed as an extraordinary burden. It is viewed as common sense.
