The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot and killed by authorities. Trump, defiantly pumping his fist as he was rushed offstage, became an enduring image of resilience, captured in a now-iconic photo by Anna Moneymaker.
The moment, described by CNN as “the defining moment of the 2024 race,” galvanized his campaign, propelling him to victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump commemorated the anniversary with a Truth Social post, writing, “One year ago, I stood tall for America in Butler, PA. The radical left tried to silence me, but we’ll NEVER back down!” He plans to attend a memorial event in Butler tonight, joined by Vice President JD Vance and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), to honor the victims and reaffirm his commitment to “fight for America.”
The event, expected to draw thousands, includes a moment of silence for Corey Comperatore, 50, of Sarver, PA, killed in the attack, and prayers for survivors.
On X, users like hailed Trump’s courage, posting, “He took a bullet for us and kept fighting!” while critics like called it a “staged photo-op.”
The shooting prompted intense debate over political violence, with a 2024 FBI report noting a 20% spike in threats against candidates during the election cycle. Trump’s campaign capitalized on the incident, raising $52 million in 24 hours, per Reuters, as supporters saw it as proof of his unwavering leadership.
A July 2025 Rasmussen poll shows 72% of Republicans view the Butler attack as a turning point that strengthened Trump’s mandate. The incident also fueled GOP criticism of Secret Service lapses, with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) demanding reforms. Democrats, including Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), condemned the violence but accused Trump of exploiting it for political gain, citing his “fist-pump” as divisive.
The anniversary comes amid Trump’s recent policy wins, including the July 4 signing of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which supporters link to his renewed focus on security post-Butler.
The event will feature heightened security, with 500 additional officers deployed, per local police. Trump’s team is also launching a “Never Surrender” merchandise line, with proceeds aiding victims’ families, per a White House statement. The Butler rally’s legacy continues to shape Trump’s narrative as a fighter against “leftist threats,” with supporters on X calling it “the day MAGA stood stronger.”
