New Jersey has removed approximately 6,600 noncitizens from its voter rolls after state officials discovered that a motor-vehicle software error improperly registered them. Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill said the affected residents had explicitly answered “no” when asked whether they were United States citizens while applying for driver’s licenses or identification cards. Despite those answers, the state system transmitted their information for voter registration. The failure occurred under former Democratic Governor Phil Murphy’s administration.

A preliminary state analysis determined that fewer than 400 of the newly registered individuals later cast ballots. Officials have not said that all 6,600 were illegal immigrants; the available reports identify them as noncitizens without establishing each person’s immigration status. Sherrill ordered the registrations removed, initiated an investigation and announced that the state would replace the software vendor responsible for the system. The registrations occurred across New Jersey and included voters listed as Democrats, Republicans and unaffiliated.

Details & Background

The error occurred when noncitizens applied for licenses or identification cards through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. New Jersey permits eligible noncitizens to obtain certain state-issued identification, but possession of a license or state ID does not confer voting eligibility. State officials said the affected applicants truthfully identified themselves as noncitizens. The system nevertheless registered them, meaning the failure appears to have originated with government software rather than false citizenship claims by the applicants.

The registrations took place between June 2023 and June 2024. That delay has intensified questions about why the problem remained unresolved for roughly two years and whether routine voter-list audits should have detected it sooner. Some affected residents reportedly contacted election officials themselves to cancel registrations they did not understand receiving. Documents reviewed by Fox News showed individuals explaining that they were not citizens and had not intended to register.

Reactions

Sherrill condemned the breakdown while emphasizing that it predated her administration. She said, “I am appalled by the reckless failures that allowed this to happen and the lack of transparency shown by those in charge at the time.” She also said the applicants were registered “through no fault of their own” after accurately answering the citizenship question. Sherrill maintained that the affected registrations were spread throughout the state and across political affiliations.

New Jersey Assembly Minority Leader John DiMaio argued that the incident demonstrated the need for stronger voter-identification safeguards. He said, “This is another example of Democrats failing to secure elections,” and called for voter ID requirements. Republican National Committee election-integrity spokesperson Ally Trilio similarly urged passage of federal citizenship-verification legislation. Sherrill, however, rejected broader claims that the discovery proved widespread nationwide election fraud and said her administration was taking direct action to investigate and correct the state’s specific failure.

Why This Matters to You

Federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections, and voter-registration systems are expected to prevent ineligible entries before ballots are issued. Even when registrations result from software mistakes rather than deliberate deception, they can weaken confidence in election administration. The fact that applicants reportedly disclosed their noncitizen status makes the failure especially troubling: the government possessed the correct information but its own system did not act on it.

New Jersey’s government should complete an independent investigation, determine which elections included ballots from affected registrants and publicly explain how those ballots were handled under state and federal law. Officials should also audit other registration periods, establish automatic alerts when citizenship answers conflict with voter-registration records and promptly notify anyone incorrectly added or removed. Federal authorities should provide secure citizenship-verification tools while ensuring that naturalized citizens are not mistakenly disenfranchised. Public trust depends on accurate rolls, transparent findings and systems capable of protecting every lawful citizen’s vote.
