The clash has quickly become one of the most watched political feuds of the summer, drawing sharp lines between competing narratives about the legacy of the Department of Government Efficiency and the wisdom of cutting U.S. foreign aid.

The dispute ignited over the weekend when Khanna appeared on the podcast “I’ve Had It,” hosted by progressive commentator Jennifer Welch. During the conversation, Khanna made a sweeping and incendiary claim about the human cost of DOGE’s dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development. “You know, they’re celebrating that he created 4,400 millionaires, but they don’t talk about the 4.5 million children around the world who he possibly sentenced to death by dismantling USAID,” Khanna said, referring to the SpaceX IPO that created enormous wealth for Musk and thousands of his employees.

Musk did not wait long to respond. On Monday morning, he posted on X in response to a New York Post story about Khanna’s comments: “Time to sue this liar.”

The post ignited a firestorm that consumed much of Washington’s political attention throughout the day, with Musk following up with a barrage of additional posts defending DOGE’s record and attacking Khanna personally. In one post, Musk dubbed the congressman “Ro the Robber,” accusing him of being a “stock insider trader” who “should be in prison.”

Musk was direct about what he believes DOGE actually did at USAID. “The standard applied by DOGE was very simple and easy: provide contact information for the recipients of aid so that we can confirm it is not fraudulent,” Musk wrote.

He argued that far from callously cutting off aid to the world’s most vulnerable people, DOGE had simply imposed basic verification standards that any responsible steward of public funds should have required all along. He pointed to a 2025 Justice Department press release documenting that a former USAID official and three contractors had pleaded guilty to bribery and fraud, arguing that this vindicated DOGE’s concerns about where taxpayer money was actually going.

“The reality is that money was being sent to corrupt politicians under the guise of aid!” Musk wrote, making the case that the problem with USAID was not a lack of funding but a fundamental corruption of its mission.

USAID, once the world’s largest foreign aid agency, was effectively closed down by the Trump administration in 2025. The agency’s shuttering was one of the most controversial actions taken by the DOGE operation during its period of peak activity under Musk’s informal leadership.

Khanna grounded his claim in a peer-reviewed study published by The Lancet medical journal in July 2025, which estimated that proposed cuts to USAID could lead to as many as 14 million preventable deaths by 2030 worldwide, including the deaths of 4.5 million children under the age of five years old.

The study was cited by advocates of USAID throughout the debates over the agency’s funding as evidence that the human costs of shuttering the agency’s programs in global health, HIV/AIDS treatment, malaria prevention, and emergency food relief would be catastrophic.

Musk and his supporters have pushed back hard on that framing, arguing that the study represented a projection of worst-case scenarios rather than a verified accounting of deaths caused by the funding cuts.

From their perspective, applying that kind of statistical modeling to Musk personally and characterizing it as him having “sentenced” children to death crosses from political criticism into defamatory falsehood. The word “possibly” that Khanna used offers him some legal cover, but Musk has indicated he intends to test that argument in court.

The announcement that Musk wants to pursue legal action has drawn a sharp response from Khanna, who has shown no inclination to back down. Khanna posted a video on X and on other platforms responding directly to Musk’s threats.

“Today, Elon Musk threatened to sue me, and he called on the Justice Department to put me in prison,” Khanna said in the video. “That’s right. The world’s richest person has spent all day tweeting, going after me. Why? Because I cited an academic study that his DOGE cuts may lead to the deaths of millions of children overseas.”

Khanna then pivoted from defense to offense, challenging Musk to debate him publicly on the merits of the DOGE cuts rather than pursue what the congressman called “lawfare.” “You know, Elon, I thought you were a free speech guy,” Khanna said.

Members of Congress enjoy a form of qualified immunity known as the Speech or Debate Clause, which protects legislators from civil or criminal liability for statements made in the course of their official duties. Critics, including Khanna and a range of international health organizations, argue that USAID represented one of the most effective tools the United States had for projecting influence and preventing the kind of instability that ultimately threatens American security.

Musk also trained his fire on Khanna’s congressional record, calling him a “stock insider trader.” Khanna’s office has not responded to those specific allegations.
