New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing intense backlash after reports revealed that his wife, Rama Duwaji, liked more than 70 Instagram posts that celebrated the brutal Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing intense backlash after reports revealed that his wife, Rama Duwaji, liked more than 70 Instagram posts that celebrated the brutal Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The posts, uncovered by investigative reporting, glorified the massacre that killed nearly 1,200 people—mostly civilians—and included denials of documented atrocities.

The controversy first broke in Jewish Insider on March 6, 2026, which detailed Duwaji liking content that hailed the Hamas border breach as “breaking the walls of apartheid” and showed Palestinians on captured IDF vehicles with captions praising “resistance since 1948.” These likes occurred on the very day of the attack and in the immediate aftermath.

The Free Press followed up with a deeper investigation, finding over 70 such posts liked by Duwaji.

Many framed the October 7 horrors as “collective liberation” or justified “resistance” against so-called apartheid, while others dismissed verified reports of sexual violence as a “mass rape hoax” fabricated by outlets like The New York Times.

Fox News highlighted Duwaji’s like on a post calling the sexual violence probe a “hoax,” along with content promoting anti-Israel protests and demanding cuts to U.S. aid for the Jewish state. Critics say this pattern shows sympathy for terrorism rather than legitimate advocacy.

Mamdani has repeatedly condemned Hamas as a terrorist organization and called the October 7 attacks a “horrific war crime.” His spokesperson stressed these views, but conservatives argue his wife’s actions raise doubts about the sincerity of his stance given his progressive background.

In response to questions, Mamdani described Duwaji as a “private person” who holds no public office and whose pre-marriage social media activity should not reflect on his administration. Many on the right reject this defense, insisting that the spouse of a major city’s mayor is not truly private when engaging publicly online.

The Times of Israel reported on Duwaji liking posts that denied Hamas rapes and celebrated the invasion as breaking “apartheid walls.”

Outlets like the New York Post and HonestReporting echoed that these were not mild pro-Palestine sentiments but endorsements of violence and denial of war crimes.

Jewish advocacy groups and conservative voices have condemned the likes as crossing into support for terrorism, especially with slogans like “from the river to the sea” often interpreted as calls for Israel’s elimination. They warn this could fuel rising antisemitism in New York.

Duwaji, a Syrian-American artist, used her personal Instagram account—where she posts political illustrations—to engage with far-left accounts praising “martyrs” and radical protests.

Some posts accused Israel of “genocide” early on and targeted U.S. leaders as complicit.

Conservatives point out the hypocrisy: Mamdani distances himself from extremism during campaigns but now faces scrutiny over views in his own household that align with the radical left’s anti-Israel wing.

The scandal has ignited calls for greater accountability from City Hall. Republican leaders and pro-Israel advocates demand Mamdani address whether such sentiments influence his policies or inner circle.

Social media backlash has been swift, with users highlighting the “over 70 posts” figure as evidence of deep-seated bias. Many tie it to broader concerns about Democratic tolerance for anti-Israel radicalism.

This comes amid Mamdani’s administration dealing with crime, budgets, and other issues. Critics fear alienating Jewish New Yorkers and moderate voters could damage his leadership.

The Free Press noted Duwaji liked content calling for ICC warrants against Israeli leaders—something Mamdani has said he would enforce if they visited NYC—further blurring lines between personal views and potential official positions.

Mainstream media coverage, like The New York Times, has been accused of downplaying the severity by framing the likes as mere “support for the Palestinian cause.” Conservatives see this as protective spin for a progressive ally.

The posts date mostly to late 2023, before Duwaji’s marriage to Mamdani in early 2025, but opponents argue public figures’ families face legitimate scrutiny when actions appear to endorse terror.

Rising antisemitic incidents since October 7 make this especially troubling for a city with one of the world’s largest Jewish populations. Community leaders fear unchecked rhetoric could embolden hate.

Conservative commentators view this as part of a pattern in leftist politics: condemning violence in words while tolerating or excusing it in practice through associations.

Mamdani’s team insists his record shows commitment to peace and condemnation of terrorism. Yet detractors demand concrete actions, like stronger support for Jewish security amid the controversy.

Business and international ties between New York and Israel could suffer if perceptions of bias grow, adding economic stakes to the political fallout.
