New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was reportedly prevented from delivering prepared remarks at the funeral of Army Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad, a 28-year-old Queens native killed during an Iranian attack on an American military base in Jordan. Mamdani attended the service at Calvary Assembly of God in Ozone Park with a speech apparently prepared on a tablet, but he was never invited to the microphone.

Witnesses cited by the New York Post said Mamdani watched as other public officials—including New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards—were called forward. One source described the mayor as visibly frustrated after realizing he would not be included among the speakers. “They kept calling names and then he was never called,” the source said. The report stated that Mamdani eventually put away his tablet after looking toward members of his staff.

Details & Background

Rampersad was one of three American soldiers killed when Iranian forces struck Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. She served with the Army’s 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment and had previously worked in radio communications in Hawaii before being stationed in Germany. Her death brought the cost of conflict home to Queens, where hundreds gathered to honor a soldier remembered for her courage, humor and devotion to others.

A graduate of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Rampersad followed a family example into military service. Those who knew her described a natural leader with a healing laugh and a selfless personality. Her mother, Carol Acevedo, remembered her daughter as a true hero, while fellow soldiers and community members honored the life she built before it was cut short. An NYPD-led motorcade later accompanied the funeral procession to Long Island National Cemetery.

Reactions

Sources familiar with the funeral arrangements said Rampersad’s relatives did not want Mamdani to speak because the family wished to limit political distractions during the service. Reports also described members of the family as supportive of President Donald Trump, while Mamdani has built his political career around democratic socialist policies and positions sharply at odds with the president. The family’s reported decision ensured that the ceremony’s invited speakers reflected its wishes rather than the expectations of City Hall.

Mamdani’s office later released the remarks he had planned to deliver. In them, the mayor honored Rampersad’s sacrifice and acknowledged the pain faced by her family and community. His decision to publish the speech allowed the public to see what he intended to say, but it did not alter the family’s control over the funeral itself. City Hall reportedly did not immediately answer repeated questions about the mayor’s exclusion or his reaction inside the church.

Why This Matters to You

The central figure in this story is not an elected official who missed an opportunity to speak. It is an American soldier who gave her life in uniform. Funerals for fallen service members are sacred moments in which families must be allowed to decide how their loved ones will be remembered. Public office does not automatically provide a right to the microphone, especially when relatives believe an official’s participation could shift attention away from the person being laid to rest.

Government leaders should approach such services with humility. Their responsibility is to honor the fallen, support grieving relatives and respect the boundaries established by the family. Attendance can demonstrate solidarity, but it should never become a demand for recognition or a contest over who receives the most visible position in the ceremony.

The episode also reflects the widening distance between progressive political leadership and many Americans who continue to place deep value on military service, patriotism and traditional expressions of national sacrifice. Mamdani’s policies and past rhetoric have made him a polarizing figure, and that political reality does not disappear when he enters a church or memorial service. Families have every right to protect a funeral from controversy they did not create and do not want.

Army Sgt. Angel Sarah Rampersad’s final journey should be remembered for her bravery, her service and the loved ones she left behind. The government must continue providing meaningful support to the families of fallen troops while holding hostile regimes accountable for attacks on American personnel. At moments of national loss, leadership begins with remembering that the honor belongs to the fallen—not to the officials seated in attendance.
