Jewish Leaders Criticize Mayor Zohran Mamdani Following Upper West Side Stabbing

Jewish community leaders in New York City publicly criticized Mayor Zohran Mamdani following the stabbing of a Jewish man on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, arguing that the mayor should reconsider some of his rhetoric surrounding Israel as authorities investigate the attack as an alleged hate crime.

Police identified the suspect as 51-year-old Raul Morales. According to the NYPD, Morales is accused of attacking two men in separate incidents near Central Park West. One victim was Jewish and wearing a kippa, while the other was Asian. Police said Morales allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” during both attacks.

Authorities charged Morales with attempted murder as a hate crime and assault as a hate crime in connection with the Jewish victim. He also faces attempted murder, assault and weapons charges stemming from the attacks. Both victims were hospitalized and reported in stable condition.

The Jewish victim, identified by officials as Moshe Grunhaus, was attacked after leaving The Jewish Center, a synagogue on West 86th Street, according to community leaders and city officials. The second victim, Chok Sung, was reportedly attacked nearby while standing on the street.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said investigators were continuing to determine a motive and that mental health may have been a factor. Authorities have not alleged that Mamdani’s political statements motivated Morales, and there is currently no reported evidence establishing such a connection.

The episode nevertheless intensified a separate, existing dispute between Mamdani and some Jewish organizations over his criticism of Israel and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

New York City has faced persistent concerns about antisemitic incidents. Tisch previously said that more than half of confirmed hate crimes in the city during part of this year had targeted Jewish people, despite Jewish residents representing a considerably smaller share of the city’s overall population.

Eric Goldstein, CEO of UJA-Federation of New York, delivered some of the strongest criticism of Mamdani, arguing that rhetoric from political leaders has consequences and accusing the mayor of contributing to an environment in which Jewish New Yorkers feel increasingly unsafe.

Mark Treyger, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, similarly emphasized the responsibility carried by elected leaders, saying that words and the broader climate created by public figures matter.

Mamdani has rejected the suggestion that his criticism of Israel amounts to hostility toward Jewish people. Speaking to NY1, the mayor reiterated his commitment to fighting antisemitism and said anyone perpetrating bigotry or hatred would be held accountable.

Mamdani also defended his criticism of Netanyahu, saying his objections concern Netanyahu’s actions as a political leader rather than his religion or background.

Former city Comptroller Brad Lander, a Jewish political ally of Mamdani, defended the mayor. Lander pointed to increased city funding for hate-crime prevention and Mamdani’s meetings with Jewish community leaders while arguing that opposition to violence and criticism of Israeli government policy are not contradictory positions.

The Upper West Side attacks bring together two distinct questions that city officials now face: the criminal investigation into an alleged hate crime and an increasingly contentious debate over rhetoric surrounding Israel and antisemitism.

The first question will be determined through the police investigation and judicial process. Morales has been accused of serious crimes, but the charges remain allegations and he is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

The political debate is different. Jewish leaders criticizing Mamdani contend that elected officials have a responsibility to consider how their language affects communities already confronting antisemitism. Mamdani maintains that condemning antisemitism and criticizing the Israeli government are compatible positions.

For New York’s government, the immediate responsibility is more concrete: investigate the attacks, prosecute any crimes supported by the evidence, protect vulnerable communities and address hate crimes without prejudging the facts of individual cases.
