The House Oversight Committee, under the leadership of Chairman James Comer (R-KY), has taken a significant step in its ongoing probe into the death of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein by requesting testimony from Tova Noel, the correctional officer on duty the night he died.

Epstein, the disgraced financier accused of running a vast sex-trafficking network involving powerful figures, was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York on August 10, 2019. Official reports concluded his death was a suicide by hanging, but persistent questions and irregularities have fueled skepticism among many Americans.

Chairman Comer announced the request for a transcribed interview with Noel on March 13, 2026, in a formal letter sent to the former guard. The interview is scheduled for March 26, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

The committee’s action stems from newly released Department of Justice documents, public reporting, and materials obtained through its investigation. These sources highlight troubling details about Noel’s activities during the shift.

Noel, along with fellow officer Michael Thomas, was previously charged in November 2019 with conspiracy and falsifying records. Prosecutors alleged the pair failed to conduct required inmate checks, instead browsing the internet and sleeping on duty.

The charges were ultimately dropped in December 2021 after Noel and Thomas entered deferred prosecution agreements. Critics argue this lenient outcome raised further doubts about accountability in the federal prison system.

Recent DOJ files reveal that Noel conducted Google searches for “latest on Epstein in jail” at 5:42 a.m. and again at 5:52 a.m. on the morning Epstein’s body was discovered, less than an hour before he was found unresponsive.

These searches occurred while Noel was supposed to be monitoring the Special Housing Unit. Epstein was located dead at approximately 6:30 a.m. by Thomas.

The timing of the internet activity has prompted questions about whether Noel was properly performing her duties or seeking information on the high-profile inmate under her watch.

Adding to the concerns, Chase Bank filed a suspicious activity report with the FBI regarding Noel’s account. Records show multiple cash deposits beginning in April 2018, culminating in a $5,000 deposit on July 30, 2019, just 11 days before Epstein’s death.

The unexplained financial transactions have drawn scrutiny, particularly given Epstein’s history of allegedly using money to influence or silence those around him.

Chairman Comer has expressed serious reservations about the official suicide narrative. In comments to Fox News, he noted that many on the committee are not fully convinced Epstein took his own life.

“Most people on the committee aren’t confident 100% that Epstein’s death was by suicide,” Comer stated, emphasizing the need for Noel to answer questions under oath.

The Oversight Committee’s Epstein investigation has expanded significantly in recent months. It has already interviewed high-profile figures including former Attorney General Bill Barr, former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, Ghislaine Maxwell, Les Wexner, former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Epstein’s accountant Richard Kahn.

Kahn’s recent deposition revealed names of individuals allegedly connected to Epstein’s wealth, further widening the scope of potential witnesses.

The committee has subpoenaed and reviewed tens of thousands of pages from banks like JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank, identifying at least 64 entities linked to Epstein.

These efforts underscore Republican-led determination to uncover the full truth about Epstein’s operations and any potential cover-ups or failures in government oversight.

Epstein’s case has long symbolized elite impunity and institutional breakdown. His 2008 plea deal in Florida, overseen by Acosta, allowed him to avoid serious federal charges despite evidence of widespread abuse.

The lenient treatment fueled accusations of a two-tiered justice system favoring the powerful.

Epstein’s 2019 arrest on federal sex-trafficking charges promised accountability, only for his death to halt further revelations.

The MCC, a federal facility, was plagued by understaffing, outdated protocols, and negligence, issues Noel and Thomas personified during that fateful shift.

Cameras malfunctioned, logs were falsified, and required checks were skipped, creating conditions ripe for tragedy or worse.

Conservatives have argued that the Epstein saga exposes deep corruption in federal agencies and demands transparency to restore public trust.

Comer’s probe aligns with this priority, refusing to accept the official story at face value amid mounting inconsistencies.

Noel has claimed in prior statements that she was the last person to see Epstein alive, reportedly delivering items to his cell around 10:40 p.m.

She has denied remembering the specific Google searches in question, though FBI records clearly document them.

The $5,000 deposit and earlier transactions remain unexplained in public records.

Whether Noel will appear voluntarily for the March 26 interview remains to be seen. The committee has not yet issued a subpoena, but failure to comply could prompt one.
