Minnesota parents are learning this week that their tax dollars have helped fund a controversial project distributing so-called transgender dolls, complete with removable and interchangeable genitalia, to children as young as four years old, a program tied directly to Governor Tim Walz.

The dolls, marketed under the name MyGender Dolls, were developed by researchers at the University of Minnesota’s Eli Coleman Institute for Sexual and Gender Health. According to the university’s own now-deleted materials, the dolls function much like classic paper dolls, except children can select and swap out internal and external genitalia along with more than one hundred pieces of clothing, hairstyles, and accessories.

Reporting from the New York Post first brought national attention to the project, revealing that the dolls carry gender-neutral names such as Sam, Rory, Avery, and Parker and are intended for children between the ages of four and ten. The description of the product, university researchers said, is meant to help children realize the different options that exist for who they can be, regardless of their body parts.

That framing alone should give every parent pause. Four-year-olds are not developmentally equipped to grapple with complex questions about gender identity, let alone play with dolls specifically designed around detachable genitalia. This is not classic child development or age appropriate education. It is ideological material dressed up as a therapeutic tool.

Governor Walz’s connection to the project runs deeper than simple state funding. In 2023, the University of Minnesota’s Eli Coleman Institute honored Walz with its inaugural Distinguished Sexual and Gender Health Champion Award, specifically citing his role in advancing gender-affirming health care policies through executive order and legislation. The award recognized Walz for what the institute called his outstanding efforts protecting sexual and reproductive health care and gender-affirming care throughout the state.

That same institute has spent years developing the MyGender Dolls project with the backing of significant taxpayer funding, according to reporting from Fox News and the Washington Examiner. The project’s lead researchers have described it as a therapeutic tool intended for licensed professionals working with children who identify as transgender or gender diverse, though critics note the marketing language and target age range go well beyond anything resembling clinical necessity.

Notably, both the university’s promotional magazine article about the dolls and a dedicated project webpage have since been quietly deleted, a decision that has only fueled further scrutiny. When an institution moves to erase its own public materials about a controversial project rather than defend it, that decision speaks volumes. If the program were something researchers were genuinely proud of and confident could withstand public scrutiny, there would be no need to scrub the internet of its existence.

Fox News Digital reported that it reached out to Walz’s office, the University of Minnesota, and the dolls’ promotional entity for comment, but received no substantive response explaining the deletions or defending the program to parents whose tax dollars helped fund it.

Republican critics have wasted no time reacting. Conservative commentator Michele Tafoya, a Minnesota resident, called the program infuriating and said she was in disbelief that the state’s tax dollars were being used to fund what she described as inappropriate material aimed at young children. Her reaction reflects a broader frustration among Minnesota conservatives who feel Governor Walz has consistently pushed the state further left on cultural and social issues than most residents are comfortable with.

This is not the first time Walz has drawn national criticism over policies related to gender and children. During the 2024 campaign, Walz earned the nickname “Tampon Tim” from Republicans after signing legislation requiring schools to provide free menstrual products in all restrooms, including boys restrooms, a policy critics viewed as emblematic of an administration more focused on progressive signaling than practical governance.

One Republican operative told a British outlet that Walz appeared intent on turning Minnesota into what they described as the San Francisco of the Midwest, a characterization that captures how far the state’s policies on gender and sexuality have shifted under his leadership compared to much of the rest of the country.

Supporters of the doll program have argued it is intended strictly for licensed therapists working one on one with children who are already navigating gender-related questions, not for general classroom distribution to the broader student population. Even accepting that defense at face value, the fact that state-funded university research produced such a product and that the governor personally accepted an award celebrating his role in advancing this kind of program remains deeply troubling to parents across the political spectrum, not just conservatives.

The American College of Pediatrics has cited earlier reporting on the project, noting that materials describing the dolls first appeared publicly in late 2024 before being scrubbed from the university’s website sometime after that reporting drew attention. The timeline suggests university officials were aware the project could generate controversy well before this week’s national coverage forced the issue into the open.

Minnesota taxpayers, many of whom hold traditional views on childhood development and the appropriate role of schools and universities in matters of gender identity, are right to demand transparency about how their money is being spent and why a project involving detachable genitalia for preschool-aged children was developed in the first place, let alone celebrated with an award for the sitting governor.

Beyond the immediate controversy, the story fits into a broader pattern conservatives have tracked for years across blue states: publicly funded institutions increasingly treating gender ideology not as a fringe academic interest but as a mainstream, state-sanctioned priority worthy of dedicated research funding, institutional awards, and product development aimed squarely at young children.

Parents’ rights advocates have long argued that decisions about how and when to introduce children to complex questions about gender identity belong with families, not with state-funded university researchers or politicians eager to burnish their progressive credentials. The MyGender Dolls controversy is likely to become a rallying point for that broader argument heading into future election cycles.

Walz, who has positioned himself as a potential national figure within the Democratic Party following his 2024 vice presidential run, now faces renewed scrutiny over his record on parental rights and childhood education, an issue that proved politically costly for Democrats in several races during the last election cycle.
