Funeral arrangements have been finalized for Sen. Lindsey Graham, the longtime South Carolina Republican who died earlier this month following what his office described as a brief and sudden illness. According to Graham’s family and Senate officials, memorial events will begin in Washington, D.C., before concluding with services in South Carolina, where he spent much of his life and political career.

A public memorial service is scheduled for July 28 in Washington, D.C., allowing members of Congress, former colleagues, administration officials, and invited guests to honor Graham’s decades of public service. The following day, July 29, funeral services will be held in Columbia before a final ceremony and burial in Pickens County, South Carolina.

Graham served in the U.S. Senate for more than 20 years after first being elected in 2002. Before joining the Senate, he represented South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives and served in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Throughout his career, he became known for his work on national security, judicial confirmations, and foreign affairs.

His death marked the end of one of the longest-serving Republican careers in modern Congress. Senate leaders have announced that Graham’s desk will remain draped in black cloth until after funeral services, a longstanding tradition honoring deceased members.

Preparations are underway for what is expected to be a well-attended series of memorial events featuring members of Congress, former presidents, administration officials, military leaders, and friends of the late senator. Officials anticipate that thousands of South Carolinians may also attend the public portions of the services.

Additional details regarding public viewing opportunities, procession routes, and security arrangements are expected to be released by organizers before the ceremonies begin.

Funeral ceremonies for longtime members of Congress often become significant national events, bringing together elected officials from across the political spectrum as well as members of the public. Graham’s services will recognize more than three decades of public service and provide an opportunity for colleagues and constituents to reflect on his career.

Following the funeral, South Carolina will continue the process of filling the Senate vacancy created by Graham’s death, with an interim appointment expected until a special election is held.
