“I think the state is malapportioned,” Governor Ron DeSantis said at a press conference in Bradenton on Thursday. “So I do think it would be appropriate to do a redistricting in the mid-decade. So we’re working through what that would look like, but I can tell you just look at how the population has shifted in different parts of the state over a four-to-five year period.”

House Speaker Daniel Perez sent a memo to lawmakers on Thursday laying out a congressional redistricting plan, starting with the creation of a new committee on redistricting. The state’s 28 congressional districts are currently split 20-8 in favor of Republicans, but DeSantis believes they can squeeze out even more MAGA victories from the Sunshine State’s growing conservative population.

Proven Track Record of Success

The governor boasted on Thursday about how he had vetoed the original congressional redistricting map that GOP state lawmakers had approved during the 2022 reapportionment process, which he called “a disaster.” He then presented his own map, which erased Black representation in Northern Florida and overall increased the number of Republicans serving in Congress from 16 to 20 which the Legislature later did approve.

The Florida Supreme Court last month upheld DeSantis’ hand-crafted map that ultimately netted Florida four additional GOP seats and eliminated Black representation in North Florida. While voting rights groups sued to strike down that map, the Florida Supreme Court upheld it as being constitutional. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice Carlos Muñiz said that legislators had a “superior” obligation to follow federal equal protection law, and not the Fair Districts Amendment passed by Florida voters in 2010.

Trump’s National Strategy

President Trump’s push to squeeze more red seats out of Florida is part of a nationwide scramble, with Republicans looking to recast the electoral map in their favor ahead of the 2026 elections. With Republicans defending a 219-212 House majority with four vacancies, even a small change in the number of competitive districts could shift the balance of power.

The White House has been driving the GOP redistricting effort, according to people familiar with the process. Republicans are discussing ways to create new red seats in Missouri, Indiana and Ohio ahead of next year’s midterm elections and carve out as many as five in Florida. DeSantis and the state Senate also appear willing to pursue a redraw, according to a person familiar with GOP discussions, who said Republican leaders believe they could add two or three red seats.

Constitutional and Legal Authority

“Very simple redrawing. We pick up five seats,” Trump said recently at the White House, referring to the ongoing effort by Texas Republicans. The Florida redistricting effort follows the same constitutional principles – ensuring that representation reflects the actual population and political preferences of the state’s citizens.

DeSantis repeated that he believes that the state’s population was severely undercounted in the 2020 U.S. Census Count, and that along with the changes in population (which in Florida includes many more registered Republicans than there were in 2020), the time is now to redistrict Congressional seats. “I talked with the Commerce Secretary right when he got sworn in and I told him, we got a raw deal on the Census,” he said. “We only got one seat when some of these other states were getting seats when we’ve obviously had more growth – we should have gotten at least two.”

Democrats in Full Panic Mode

“This is nothing more than a desperate attempt to rig the system and silence voters before the 2026 election,” Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried said in a written statement. The Democrats are terrified because they know this will end their dreams of taking back the House and obstructing President Trump’s agenda.

“Redrawing Congressional maps outside of the standard post-census cycle threatens fair representation, undermines the intent of our democratic system, and risks silencing our diverse communities,” Fried whined. What she really means is that Democrats are angry they can’t keep artificially inflated seats based on outdated population data that doesn’t reflect Florida’s conservative growth.

This is about ensuring that Florida’s representation in Congress actually reflects the will of Florida voters who have chosen conservative leadership election after election. The current maps were drawn based on 2020 data that undercounted Florida’s massive population growth, much of which has been conservative Americans fleeing Democrat-run states. When Florida gets the representation it deserves, you’ll have more Republican fighters in Congress supporting President Trump’s America First agenda, securing the border, and standing up to the radical left. Every new GOP seat from Florida is another vote to confirm Trump’s Supreme Court nominees, pass his tax cuts, and investigate the deep state corruption that has plagued Washington for too long.
