Democrats are calling on Rep. Eric Swalwell to drop out of California’s 2026 governor’s race following serious allegations of sexual misconduct and assault.

The pressure mounted quickly on April 10 and 11, 2026, after reports from the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN detailed claims from multiple women, including a former staffer.

The former staffer accused Swalwell of sexually assaulting her twice when she was too intoxicated to consent, once in 2019 while she worked for him and again in 2024 after she left his office.

CNN reported four women in total making accusations of misconduct, including unwanted touching, intoxicated encounters, and unsolicited explicit messages.

Swalwell has strongly denied the allegations. He called them “flat false” and “politically motivated,” claiming they surfaced on the eve of an election where he was a frontrunner.

He said he has always protected women during his time as a prosecutor and congressman and plans to defend himself with facts, including possible legal action.

Top Democrats moved fast to distance themselves. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she spoke with Swalwell and told him it is best for the matter to be investigated outside of a gubernatorial campaign.

She urged respect for the woman who came forward and full transparency.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, along with Whip Katherine Clark and Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar, issued a joint statement calling for a swift investigation and for Swalwell to immediately end his campaign for governor.

California Sen. Adam Schiff withdrew his endorsement and urged Swalwell to drop out.

Other California Democrats, including Reps. Jimmy Gomez and Adam Gray, who had served as campaign co-chairs, also called on him to leave the race.

Labor unions and additional allies pulled their support within hours.

Several Democratic candidates already in the governor’s race joined the calls for Swalwell to exit.

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan were among those publicly urging him to take responsibility and step aside.

The allegations also led to practical fallout for the campaign. Swalwell’s main Democratic fundraising platform halted activity, staff members resigned, and endorsements evaporated rapidly.

California Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks described the claims as deeply disturbing but stopped short of an immediate demand to drop out in initial statements.

The swift reaction from fellow Democrats highlights the political reality in deep-blue California. With a crowded primary field and a top-two primary system, party leaders appear concerned that a damaged Swalwell candidacy could split the Democratic vote and create an opening for a Republican in the general election.

Swalwell had been viewed as one of the leading contenders to replace term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom. His campaign emphasized progressive priorities, but the scandal has now overshadowed policy discussion.

This episode fits a familiar pattern for Democrats in recent years. High-profile figures face serious personal allegations, yet the party often prioritizes political damage control over consistent standards of accountability.

Many conservatives note that similar accusations against figures on the right trigger immediate and total condemnation, while the left’s response can appear more calculated based on electoral math.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office is reportedly investigating at least one of the claims involving an incident in New York.

Swalwell’s attorney sent a cease-and-desist letter to one accuser demanding retraction.

Republicans have pointed out the contrast with past Democratic handling of misconduct claims. Swalwell’s history already includes well-known ties to a Chinese spy who worked on his campaign, an episode that drew criticism but did not end his career in Congress.

The calls for Swalwell to drop out focus on the governor’s race rather than an immediate resignation from the House.

Critics on the right argue this shows the priority is protecting the party’s chances in California rather than demanding full accountability regardless of office.

California’s governor’s race was already shaping up as a messy contest with multiple Democratic hopefuls. The Swalwell scandal adds another layer of dysfunction to a state government long criticized for high taxes, crime, homelessness, and failing schools under one-party Democratic rule.

As of April 12, 2026, Swalwell has not announced he will leave the race. He stated his focus is on his family and defending his record against what he calls lies.

The situation remains fluid. Further developments, including any formal investigation outcomes or additional accusers, could intensify pressure on Swalwell and the broader Democratic field.

This episode underscores ongoing questions about standards in public life. Conservatives have long argued that the elite in Washington and Sacramento often operate under different rules, with political survival taking precedence over truth and victim concerns.

Americans deserve leaders held to the same standards regardless of party. If the allegations prove credible after proper investigation, Swalwell should face real consequences, not just campaign setbacks.

The Democratic scramble to push Swalwell aside reveals more about party self-preservation than sudden commitment to zero tolerance. True accountability would mean consistent application of principles, not selective outrage timed to protect electoral prospects in deep-blue California.
