Rep. Eric Swalwell announced on April 13, 2026, that he will resign from Congress following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and assault made by four women.
In a statement posted on X, Swalwell said he is stepping down because “it is wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties.” He expressed regret to his family, staff, and constituents for “mistakes in judgment” in his past, while continuing to deny the most serious claims. He called some of the accusations “flat false” and said he would fight them.
The resignation comes days after Swalwell suspended his campaign for California governor. A former staffer accused him of sexually assaulting her twice — once in 2019 while she worked for him and again in 2024 after she left his office. Three other women alleged unwanted advances, unsolicited explicit messages, and inappropriate behavior.

The claims, first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN, caused an immediate collapse of his gubernatorial bid. Prominent Democrats including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Sen. Adam Schiff urged him to drop out. Labor unions and campaign co-chairs withdrew support. The House Ethics Committee opened an investigation, and the Manhattan District Attorney’s office is investigating at least one claim.
Swalwell had been seen as a leading contender to replace term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom in deep-blue California. His rapid downfall shows how quickly party support disappears when scandals threaten electoral chances.
Conservatives have highlighted the selective outrage from Democrats. Similar allegations against figures on the right often result in immediate and total condemnation, while the left frequently calculates its response based on political damage. Swalwell’s past also included well-known ties to a Chinese spy who worked on his campaign — an episode that drew criticism but did not end his congressional career earlier.
This scandal adds to growing frustration with one-party Democratic rule in California. The state struggles with high taxes, rising crime, homelessness, failing schools, and sanctuary policies that release thousands of criminal illegal aliens back into communities despite federal detainers. Nationwide, ICE has arrested over 453,000 criminal illegal aliens since President Trump took office, yet sanctuary jurisdictions like California have hindered those efforts by releasing dangerous individuals.
Swalwell’s resignation leaves California’s 15th Congressional District without representation until a special election is called. Governor Newsom will decide the timing. The broader gubernatorial race now proceeds without one of its early frontrunners, exposing further dysfunction in the Democratic field.
Americans expect elected officials to uphold basic standards of conduct. When serious accusations of sexual assault involving a former staffer surface, the response should be full transparency and accountability, not damage control timed to protect a political party.
The swift calls for Swalwell to exit both the governor’s race and Congress suggest the priority was safeguarding the Democratic brand in California more than demanding consistent justice. True accountability would apply the same standards regardless of party or office.
This episode serves as another reminder of the two-tiered system many conservatives have warned about for years. Elites often receive softer treatment while everyday Americans face the full weight of the law. Voters in California and across the country are increasingly rejecting leaders who fail to deliver results or personal integrity.
As the investigation continues and the House Ethics Committee proceeds, the focus should remain on facts, victim testimony, and equal application of rules. Swalwell’s resignation removes him from Congress but does not resolve the underlying questions.
California residents already pay some of the highest taxes in the nation yet see strained resources, public safety challenges, and the consequences of progressive policies that prioritize ideology over practical governance. Scandals like this only deepen public distrust in Sacramento and Washington.
The Trump administration has emphasized restoring law and order, including strong immigration enforcement that targets criminal illegal aliens. The contrast with California’s approach under long-term Democratic leadership remains stark.
Swalwell’s exit marks the latest high-profile departure driven by personal allegations in a party that has often struggled with consistent standards. Americans deserve representatives who prioritize duty, integrity, and the interests of their constituents over personal ambition or political survival.
The coming special election and ongoing gubernatorial race will give California voters another chance to assess the direction of their state. Many hope it leads to a rejection of the failed policies that have contributed to the state’s challenges for years.
