Multiple activists who identified themselves as connected to the Democratic Socialists of America signed a public declaration promising to support the People’s Republic of China and defend what the document calls “Chinese socialism.” The signatories joined a statement published by Friends of Socialist China, an organization that says it exists to promote a favorable understanding of China’s political and economic system. Fox News reported that several names appearing on the declaration included references to DSA membership or positions connected to the organization.

The declaration states, “We, Friends of Socialist China, aim to support the People’s Republic of China and to promote understanding of Chinese socialism.” It later declares that the survival of Chinese socialism is important not only to China but to all humanity, adding, “We resolve to support, defend and build understanding of Chinese socialism.” The language goes significantly beyond advocating peaceful relations with Beijing. It represents an ideological commitment to promoting and defending the Chinese system itself.

Details & Background

Among the listed signatories was Mirah Wood, described in the declaration as co-chair of the Middle East and Africa Subcommittee of the DSA International Committee. Another signatory, John McGrath, was identified as being affiliated with the DSA International Committee’s anti-war work. Archived versions of the statement reportedly show both names on the list for several years, while other signatories also included descriptions indicating DSA membership. Fox News contacted the DSA and its International Committee for comment.

The statement argues that the historical record of socialist nations has been “overwhelmingly positive” and portrays the worldwide expansion of socialism as necessary to prevent climate breakdown, eliminate poverty and establish peace. It also attacks conventional descriptions of socialist regimes as authoritarian systems associated with secret police, political prisons, censorship, famine and dictatorship. The document labels those accounts part of a broader propaganda narrative that its supporters believe must be challenged.

The declaration’s sweeping defense of socialism contrasts with other material published within the broader DSA network. A Young Democratic Socialists of America article, for example, encouraged solidarity with Chinese students organizing against the Chinese Communist Party and highlighted engagement with Hong Kong, Tibetan, Uyghur and Taiwanese activists. Other DSA-associated publications have described the Chinese government as reactionary or cautioned against supporting Beijing merely because it presents itself as socialist. Those differences demonstrate that the American socialist movement contains competing factions rather than one unified position on China.

Reactions

The reported involvement of DSA-linked individuals is likely to intensify scrutiny of the organization’s international activities and ideological alliances. The DSA describes itself as the largest socialist organization in the United States and says it seeks an economy and civil society controlled by working people. Its International Committee has also condemned what it calls a U.S.-driven push for a new Cold War with China, arguing that American political leaders have encouraged hostility toward Beijing.

Critics will draw a sharp distinction between opposing unnecessary military conflict and signing a pledge to defend another country’s socialist system. China is not simply a theoretical model discussed in a university seminar. It is a major economic, military and technological competitor whose ruling Communist Party exercises extensive control over political speech, organized opposition and national institutions. A promise by American political activists to defend Chinese socialism therefore invites questions about whose interests are being advanced and where their ultimate loyalty lies.

Supporters of the declaration frame their position as international solidarity rather than allegiance to the Chinese Communist Party. They argue that Western accounts of China are shaped by capitalist interests and that Beijing’s economic development deserves recognition. However, the pledge’s language is unambiguous in its commitment to promoting, supporting and defending Chinese socialism—an ideological position that goes far beyond calling for diplomacy or opposing war.

Why This Matters to You

Americans have a right to know what politically influential organizations and their activists believe, especially when those activists seek to shape public policy, congressional priorities, education, labor organizations and local government. The DSA has become increasingly visible in Democratic politics, and candidates aligned with the organization have gained elected offices across the country. When individuals associated with that movement endorse a document defending the governing philosophy of a foreign competitor, the public deserves complete transparency about those relationships.

The controversy also underscores the importance of distinguishing ordinary political disagreement from foreign ideological advocacy. Americans are free to support socialism, capitalism or any other lawful political philosophy. That freedom does not prevent voters, journalists or government officials from closely examining connections between domestic political networks and organizations promoting foreign governments. Transparency is especially important when international committees, foreign travel, political conferences or outside funding may be involved.

The federal government should continue enforcing foreign-agent disclosure requirements, investigating undisclosed foreign influence where credible evidence exists and protecting American institutions from covert political pressure. Any inquiry must be grounded in evidence and constitutional protections, not guilt by association. Signing an ideological statement is not itself proof that a person is acting under Beijing’s direction, and reporting should not falsely imply that the entire DSA formally adopted the pledge when the known signatories were individuals identifying themselves as DSA-linked.

What is established is serious enough: American socialist activists placed their names on a declaration promising to support and defend Chinese socialism. As China competes with the United States for economic, military and technological power, Americans cannot afford to ignore the ideologies taking root inside their own political institutions.
