Senator Rand Paul says his committee has uncovered evidence that Dr. Anthony Fauci destroyed government records related to the origins of COVID-19 and personally instructed colleagues to delete emails, then delete them again from their deleted folders to ensure they could never be recovered.

The Kentucky Republican, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said his staff spent months combing through millions of documents connected to the federal government’s pandemic response. What they found, in his telling, is a clear pattern of deliberate concealment carried out by the very man who spent years publicly presenting himself as a trustworthy voice of science.

According to Paul, Fauci and a circle of fellow virologists privately believed COVID-19 may have leaked from a laboratory even as they worked publicly to dismiss that possibility as implausible. Paul says the emails show these officials coordinated their messaging to shut down anyone who dared suggest the lab leak theory deserved serious investigation, all while harboring private doubts about the very narrative they were promoting to the American public.

This is not simply a case of officials being wrong. If Paul’s findings hold up, it represents a coordinated effort by taxpayer-funded scientists to mislead Congress and the public about what they actually believed, while simultaneously working behind the scenes to erase the paper trail that could prove it.

The evidence did not emerge overnight. Back in September of 2025, Paul sent a formal letter to Fauci stating that the committee had obtained records showing Fauci directed employees at the National Institutes of Health to destroy federal records. Paul wrote that these documents pointed to Fauci’s direct involvement in efforts to conceal information relevant to the committee’s investigation and that they appeared to directly contradict testimony Fauci had previously given to Congress under oath.

Among the most damning pieces of evidence cited by investigators is a February 2020 email exchange just one day after the now infamous Proximal Origins conference call, during which Fauci and fellow scientists Jeremy Farrar and Francis Collins discussed how to get ahead of the science and the public narrative surrounding COVID-19’s origins. In that email, Fauci reportedly instructed then-NIH Director Francis Collins to delete the message immediately after reading it.

Another email, dated July of 2020, shows Fauci dismissing Senator Paul’s oversight efforts in crude terms before instructing his own chief of staff to delete that email as well. The pattern, according to investigators, repeats itself throughout the documents the committee has reviewed, painting a picture of an official who understood exactly how damaging these communications could be and took active steps to make sure they would never surface.

Paul has been blunt in his public assessment, stating flatly that he believes Fauci committed a felony by lying to Congress and that the Department of Justice should pursue criminal charges. He has said that only a formal legal proceeding could properly determine whether Fauci’s Biden-era pardon would even hold up against felony charges tied to record destruction and false statements made to lawmakers.

The scope of the alleged destruction extends beyond Fauci himself. Investigators have also focused on Dr. David Morens, a former senior adviser to Fauci at the NIH, who was indicted earlier this year on federal charges connected to concealing and destroying records tied to COVID-19 research grants. Prosecutors allege Morens worked to revive a controversial coronavirus research grant while actively hiding communications about the effort, facing charges including conspiracy against the United States and destruction of records in a federal investigation.

The Justice Department’s case against Morens adds significant weight to Paul’s broader allegations against Fauci himself. It is difficult to dismiss claims of a coordinated cover-up as partisan speculation when a member of Fauci’s own inner circle is now facing felony charges for doing precisely what Paul has accused Fauci of directing.

Separately, emails uncovered by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic reportedly show Morens using personal email accounts specifically to avoid Freedom of Information Act requests while discussing the origins of COVID-19, and that a broader conspiracy existed within the NIH’s own FOIA office to help him unlawfully destroy records and dodge public disclosure laws entirely. If true, this suggests the cover up extended well beyond a single rogue official and involved systemic efforts within the agency itself to keep the American public in the dark.

Fauci’s own diary entries, portions of which have been made public, reportedly reveal a man far more consumed with his own fame and public image than with the scientific rigor he claimed to champion. Investigators and commentators reviewing the diary have pointed to entries showing Fauci fixated on celebrity encounters and media attention even as the pandemic he was supposedly managing devastated American families and businesses.

The diary reportedly also sheds light on Fauci’s private disdain for scientists who publicly disagreed with him, including current NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, who co-authored the Great Barrington Declaration questioning the wisdom of prolonged lockdowns, and neuroradiologist Dr. Scott Atlas, who served on the White House COVID Task Force during Trump’s first term. According to reporting on the diary, Fauci went so far as to attempt recruiting Trump son in law Jared Kushner to help have Atlas removed from the task force altogether, rather than simply engaging with his scientific arguments on the merits.

This raises a troubling pattern. Rather than allowing an open scientific debate about lockdown policy, mask mandates, or the origins of the virus, the record increasingly suggests Fauci worked to sideline and discredit anyone who challenged his preferred narrative, all while shielding his own communications from public scrutiny.

The revelations have reignited long standing conservative demands for full transparency about the pandemic response, demands that were dismissed for years as politically motivated conspiracy theories. Now, with a sitting Senate committee chairman presenting documentary evidence of record destruction, and with a former Fauci adviser facing federal indictment for related conduct, those demands look considerably more justified in hindsight.

Reaction online has ranged from frustration to outright anger. Many Americans who lost businesses, missed years of normal schooling for their children, or endured strict isolation during the pandemic have expressed exhaustion with a process that continues to produce damning revelations without any accompanying accountability. Calls for prosecution have grown louder, with many pointing out that congressional hearings alone accomplish little if no legal consequences follow.

Paul’s committee has requested a sweeping array of additional records from Fauci, covering nearly every email address, phone number, and messaging application he used between 2018 and 2023, including encrypted or third party applications. The broad scope of the request signals that investigators believe the record destruction they have already uncovered may represent only a fraction of what actually occurred.

Fauci, for his part, has not offered a detailed public rebuttal to the destruction allegations, instead choosing to invoke his Fifth Amendment rights when directly questioned about them during his recent Senate appearance. That silence, conservatives argue, speaks volumes on its own. A man confident that he did nothing wrong would have little reason to refuse every single question put to him under oath.

As the investigation continues, the central question facing lawmakers, and ultimately the Justice Department, is whether the destruction of these records constitutes a prosecutable offense separate from the broader conduct covered by Fauci’s Biden era pardon. Given that pardon covers conduct only through January of 2025, any destruction of evidence proven to have occurred after that date, or any effort to obstruct the current Senate investigation, could fall entirely outside its protection.

For millions of Americans still seeking answers about how the pandemic was handled and why so many questions were suppressed rather than honestly debated, the mounting evidence of deliberate record destruction offers a partial but deeply unsatisfying explanation. The truth, it increasingly appears, was never lost. It was deleted, on purpose, by the very officials entrusted to protect the public’s right to know it.
