Only 1 in 27 border migrants met the core requirement for winning political asylum in the United States, according to a new survey by pro-migration advocacy groups that has inadvertently exposed the massive fraud at the heart of Joe Biden’s open-border disaster.
The survey, conducted among 364 deported or stranded migrants in El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica, revealed that just 3.7 percent claimed they were fleeing persecution based on political opinion, the key legal threshold for legitimate asylum claims under U.S. law.
In stark contrast, 54 percent openly admitted their primary motivation was “economy and employment.” In other words, they came for better jobs and higher wages in American workplaces, not to escape government oppression.

This bombshell finding comes from groups that strongly support migration, including the American Friends Service Committee, making the low number of genuine asylum seekers even more damning for the Biden administration’s failed policies.
For years, Democrats and their media allies insisted that the record-breaking surges at the southern border were driven by desperate refugees seeking safety from violence and persecution.
Yet the data now confirms what conservatives have warned about all along. The vast majority of illegal border crossers were economic migrants gaming a broken asylum system.
U.S. asylum law is clear. It requires a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.
Simply wanting a better paycheck or escaping general poverty and crime does not qualify someone for asylum protection.
The survey’s own testimony from the 364 interviewees shows very few even came close to meeting that strict legal test.
Instead, the Biden administration’s catch-and-release policies, combined with lax credible fear screenings, allowed millions to flood into the country with little scrutiny.
This pro-migration survey was included in a larger report scheduled to be promoted on March 26 by organizations pushing for even more open borders.
Even these advocates could not hide the uncomfortable truth. The border crisis was never primarily about asylum. It was about unchecked illegal immigration for economic gain.
Breitbart News has long documented how the Biden administration dismantled Trump-era border security measures from day one, leading to historic encounters exceeding 10 million under his watch.
The result was overwhelmed Border Patrol agents, strained communities, increased fentanyl deaths, and soaring costs to American taxpayers.
Now, with President Donald Trump back in office and focused on mass deportations, this survey serves as fresh ammunition for restoring law and order.
Critics on the left will likely try to spin the findings or claim the sample is unrepresentative. But the numbers speak for themselves, and they come from the other side.
Only 3.7 percent citing political opinion persecution means roughly 26 out of 27 migrants surveyed did not qualify under the core asylum standard.
That ratio exposes the systemic abuse that turned America’s refugee system into a backdoor for job seekers.
Many of these economic migrants passed initial credible fear interviews, a low bar designed for quick screening, only to disappear into the interior and never show up for final hearings.
Immigration courts have been buried under millions of backlogged cases, with final grant rates for Central American claims historically low in many periods.
The survey interviews took place in countries of origin or transit after migrants were removed or turned back, providing rare post-encounter insight into true motivations.
Pro-migration groups conducted the work expecting to highlight hardships caused by stricter enforcement, but the self-reported reasons for migrating undermined their own narrative.
Economy and employment dwarfed every other factor, including claims of generalized violence or family reunification.
This aligns with long-standing conservative arguments that lax policies incentivize illegal entries disguised as asylum claims.
Under Biden and Kamala Harris, the border became a revolving door, with repeat crossers and got-aways adding to the chaos.
American communities from small towns to big cities bore the burden, with strained schools, hospitals, shelters, and rising crime in some areas linked to illegal immigration.
Welfare usage among immigrant-headed households has also surged, with nearly half relying on government programs according to separate analyses.
The survey adds to mounting evidence that Biden’s policies were not compassionate but reckless, prioritizing foreign nationals over American citizens.
Trump’s return has already shifted the dynamic, with renewed focus on enforcement, workplace raids, and ending catch-and-release.
Restoring merit-based legal immigration and securing the border will protect genuine refugees while stopping the flow of economic opportunists.
Congress must act to reform the asylum system by raising the credible fear standard and expediting removals for meritless claims.
Without such changes, future administrations could repeat the same failures.
The pro-migration lobby’s own data now validates what conservatives have said for years. The border crisis was built on a false narrative.
Most migrants were not fleeing tyranny but pursuing economic opportunity through illegal entry.
This revelation should end any remaining arguments for amnesty or continued lax enforcement.
Americans deserve an immigration system that puts their safety, wages, and sovereignty first.
The survey of 364 migrants is a small but telling snapshot of a much larger issue involving millions.
Extrapolating the 1-in-27 ratio suggests the overwhelming majority of Biden-era encounters involved individuals without valid asylum claims.
Border states like Texas and Arizona paid a heavy price, with local leaders repeatedly calling for federal support.
Even some Democrats in sanctuary cities eventually felt the strain as migrant arrivals overwhelmed local resources.
Now, as deportations ramp up under Trump, the focus must remain on removing those who entered fraudulently.
The American Friends Service Committee and its partners planned to use the report to criticize enforcement policies, but their own findings told a different story.
Instead, the data revealed that many hardships stemmed from voluntary economic migration.
True compassion means enforcing laws so that legal pathways remain viable and genuine asylum seekers can be protected.
Flooding the system with weak claims only delays justice for those who truly qualify.
Conservatives have long called for ending the abuse of parole, TPS expansions, and other executive workarounds.
This survey reinforces that the asylum loophole has been a major pull factor.
With Trump’s America First agenda in motion, the era of open borders is coming to an end.
