The Department of Justice under President Donald Trump has referred tens of thousands of potential non-citizens identified on state voter rolls for further investigation, delivering a major blow to those who claim illegal voting by non-citizens is a myth and advancing the administration’s aggressive push to restore integrity to America’s elections.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon revealed the scale of the problem during a recent interview, stating that DOJ’s review of voter rolls from nearly half the states has uncovered tens of thousands of non-citizens improperly registered to vote, alongside hundreds of thousands of deceased individuals still lingering on the lists.
“For every person that we’ve seen a story about, I know of dozens and dozens more cases,” Dhillon said, underscoring that the referrals represent only the tip of the iceberg as federal prosecutors dig deeper into potential criminal violations.

This breakthrough stems from the Trump administration’s determined campaign to obtain unredacted voter rolls from every state, using tools like the Department of Homeland Security’s SAVE database to cross-check citizenship status against federal immigration records.
States such as Texas have already identified thousands of potential non-citizens through similar checks, many of whom had voting histories before being flagged for removal.
Conservatives have long warned that automatic voter registration at DMVs and other government agencies, combined with weak verification in blue states, has allowed non-citizens to slip onto rolls and potentially influence elections. The DOJ’s findings validate those concerns.
The effort faces fierce resistance from Democrat-led states, many of which are suing the DOJ or delaying compliance with requests for full data, citing privacy concerns while critics argue this shields poor maintenance of voter lists.
Attorney General Pam Bondi has made clear that accurate voter rolls are essential for fair elections, filing lawsuits against multiple states that refuse to comply with federal requests under the National Voter Registration Act.
In addition to non-citizens, the review has exposed large numbers of outdated registrations, including deceased individuals who remain on voter rolls, highlighting systemic issues in list maintenance.
This comes as the administration coordinates with DHS to share data for immigration and criminal probes, ensuring potential illegal voters may face consequences, including prosecution or deportation.
Critics on the left argue the numbers represent a small percentage, but supporters counter that even small irregularities can impact close elections and emphasize that only citizens should vote.
The referrals build on state-level actions, such as Texas referring potential cases to its attorney general after database matches, alongside similar audits in other states.
Trump’s America First approach prioritizes cleaning up the system ahead of the 2026 midterms, focusing on stricter enforcement and verification measures.
While some eligible voters may be asked to provide proof of citizenship to resolve discrepancies, the effort centers on removing ineligible registrations from voter rolls.
House Republicans, including Oversight Chairman James Comer, continue pushing for further investigation, seeking accountability and greater transparency on the scope of the issue nationwide.
