Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) spent nearly $19,000 from her campaign funds in 2025 on services from a psychiatrist specializing in controversial ketamine therapy, listing the payments as “leadership training and consulting,” according to Federal Election Commission records.

The New York Democrat’s campaign committee made three separate disbursements totaling $18,725 to Dr. Brian Boyle, a Boston-based physician and chief psychiatric officer at Stella Mental Health, a chain offering “novel” treatments popular in elite circles.

Payments broke down as $11,550 in March 2025, $2,800 in May, and $4,375 in October—funds drawn from donor contributions meant for political activities, not personal wellness.

Conservatives are raising serious questions about whether this use of campaign money skirts federal rules prohibiting personal expenses, especially when labeled vaguely to potentially disguise the true nature.

Dr. Boyle specializes in interventional psychiatry, including ketamine infusions, Spravato (esketamine nasal spray), transcranial magnetic stimulation, and other unorthodox methods for treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and anxiety—treatments that have drawn both praise and skepticism.

Campaign-finance experts point out that FEC guidelines bar using contributions for costs that would exist “irrespective” of running for office or holding government positions, a standard applied case-by-case.

This expenditure stands out amid AOC’s history of high-profile campaign spending, including celebrity makeup artists and other non-traditional items, fueling criticism that taxpayer-influenced donor dollars are being misused.

The “leadership training and consulting” designation appears designed to justify the outlay as campaign-related, but critics argue it strains credibility when tied to a psychiatrist known for ketamine-based therapies often sought for personal mental health needs.

While mental health support is important, conservatives emphasize that campaign funds belong to donors expecting support for elections, policy advocacy, and political operations, not private therapy sessions.

This revelation highlights a broader pattern among some left-wing politicians who blur lines between personal needs and campaign resources, eroding trust in how small-dollar donations are spent.

AOC has long championed expanded mental health access and research, including novel therapies, but using donor money for what looks like personal consulting raises ethical red flags.

The New York Post first broke the story, noting Boyle’s Harvard training and affiliations with prestigious hospitals, yet underscoring the controversial nature of ketamine treatments that appeal to Hollywood and Wall Street elites.

Online reaction has been swift and mocking, with many pointing out the irony of a self-described socialist spending big on high-end psychiatric services funded by grassroots contributors.

Fox News and other outlets have amplified the mockery, framing it as another example of liberal hypocrisy—preaching equity while indulging in exclusive treatments.

The FEC records are public and transparent, but the vague categorization invites scrutiny and potential complaints to the commission for review.

If deemed personal use, this could violate federal law, though enforcement often depends on clear evidence and commission discretion.
