For years, the American public was told to trust the science and, by extension, to trust Dr. Anthony Fauci without question. Now, thanks to Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, the country is getting a look at what Fauci was actually thinking behind closed doors, and it is not a flattering picture.

Paul, who has spent years clashing with Fauci over the origins of COVID-19 and the government’s pandemic response, released more than a thousand pages of Fauci’s personal diary entries this week. The timing is no accident. Fauci is set to testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and the diary gives lawmakers fresh ammunition heading into what promises to be a contentious hearing.

The entries paint a picture of a bureaucrat who was far less certain in private than he ever let on in public. While Fauci spent years dismissing the lab leak theory as a fringe conspiracy and mocking those who raised it, his own private writings show he was wrestling with the possibility that COVID-19 escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan.

That alone should trouble every American who was told the lab leak theory was misinformation, only to watch social media platforms censor anyone who suggested otherwise. Fauci was among the loudest voices insisting the virus had a natural origin. His diary tells a different story.

The diary also reportedly touches on the government’s masking guidance. For months, Americans were told cloth masks were essential to stopping the spread of the virus, only to later learn that guidance was shakier than officials admitted. Entries suggest Fauci had doubts about the evidence behind some of the mandates he helped champion.

School closures, one of the most devastating policy decisions of the pandemic era, also appear in the diary. Millions of children fell behind academically and suffered mental health setbacks because of extended shutdowns that Fauci and other health officials supported. His private reflections reportedly acknowledge the shortcomings of that approach, even as he publicly defended prolonged closures.

Perhaps most telling are the entries about Fauci’s own celebrity status. Rather than showing humility about the enormous power he wielded over American life, the diary reveals a man who reveled in his newfound fame. He wrote about being invited to exclusive parties and enjoying glowing media coverage, even as ordinary Americans lost jobs, businesses, and in some cases their sanity under the restrictions he helped design.

The diary reportedly includes candid remarks about former President Trump as well, with Fauci privately griping about what he considered Trump’s rambling style during briefings. Fauci was never shy about his frustrations with the Trump administration, but seeing them in his own handwriting adds a new layer to the very public disputes the two had throughout 2020.

Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who sits on the committee that will question Fauci, has already weighed in on the release, and his reaction reflects what many Republicans have said for years. The diary confirms that Fauci knew more, and was less certain, than he let on to the American people.

None of this should come as a shock to anyone who was paying attention during the pandemic. Fauci changed his public guidance repeatedly, from mask mandates to social distancing rules to the origins of the virus itself, all while insisting he was simply “following the science.” Critics argued at the time that the science was far less settled than Fauci claimed. His own diary now backs that up.

The legal process behind the release has also drawn scrutiny. Paul used his subpoena power as part of the committee’s ongoing investigation into the pandemic response, a process that has taken years to bear fruit. Legal analysts have noted the unusual nature of releasing a private diary through congressional authority, though Paul’s office maintains the entries are directly relevant to the committee’s oversight work.

Fauci has not offered a detailed public response to the specific entries, though he is expected to face pointed questions about them during Wednesday’s hearing. Given his history of deflecting blame during past appearances before Congress, it remains to be seen whether he will offer Americans a genuine reckoning or simply more of the same evasive answers.

What makes this release so significant is not just the content, but the source. This is not a leaked memo from a disgruntled staffer or a whistleblower account that can be dismissed as secondhand. These are Fauci’s own private words, written in his own hand, during the years when he held more influence over American daily life than perhaps any unelected official in modern history.

Conservatives have long argued that the pandemic response was driven as much by politics and image management as it was by settled science. The diary entries about Fauci’s enjoyment of his celebrity status lend credibility to that argument. A public health official focused purely on saving lives would have little time to savor magazine profiles and party invitations.

The revelations also raise fresh questions about accountability. Fauci retired from his post at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in late 2022 with a lengthy career and a substantial pension, never facing any formal consequences for the policy decisions that upended American life. Wednesday’s hearing offers lawmakers a chance to finally press him directly on what his own diary reveals.

Families who lost loved ones during the pandemic, business owners who lost their livelihoods, and parents who watched their children struggle through remote learning all deserve honest answers about what public health officials actually believed at the time. For years, they were told the guidance was rooted in unshakable scientific consensus. The diary suggests otherwise.

It is also worth noting how quickly some media outlets have moved to frame the diary in the most favorable light possible for Fauci, focusing on his complaints about Trump rather than his private doubts about the lab leak and his public confidence in guidance he privately questioned. That selective framing has been a hallmark of pandemic-era coverage from the start.

Rand Paul deserves credit for his persistence on this issue. Long before it was politically fashionable to question Fauci, Paul was doing so in televised hearings, often facing ridicule from the same media figures who now seem eager to downplay what his investigation has uncovered.

As Wednesday’s hearing approaches, all eyes will be on whether Fauci finally offers a straight answer about the origins of COVID-19, the effectiveness of the mitigation measures he championed, and why his private assessments so often diverged from his public pronouncements. Americans have waited years for this kind of accountability.
