On July 20, 2025, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), a leading figure in the progressive “Squad,” stunned her colleagues by voting against an amendment to cut $500 million in funding for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, part of the $831.5 billion Department of Defense Appropriations Act (H.R.4016). The amendment, pushed by Squad members Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Summer Lee (D-PA), alongside Reps. Al Green (D-TX) and Thomas Massie (R-KY), aimed to block military aid to Israel amid its ongoing conflict with Hamas.
The House rejected the amendment, and AOC’s vote to maintain Iron Dome funding—contrary to her prior opposition—sparked a firestorm, with the bill passing 221-209. AOC later voted against the overall defense bill, but her Iron Dome stance drew sharp criticism from progressives, per the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
AOC’s decision marks a significant split from her Squad allies, who have consistently opposed unconditional U.S. aid to Israel, citing human rights abuses against Palestinians. Tlaib, during the debate, called Israel “an apartheid state,” echoing a 2021 Human Rights Watch report, while Omar tweeted, “No more cents for genocide!”

AOC, in a clarifying statement, acknowledged Israel’s actions in Gaza but argued that Iron Dome funding is “absolutely legitimate” for defense, per a 2023 CNN interview. This shift echoes her 2021 vote, when she switched from “no” to “present” on a $1 billion Iron Dome bill, citing a rushed process and “hateful targeting,” including death threats, per her letter to constituents. That emotional moment, where she was seen weeping on the House floor, was slammed as “political theatre” by critics like Meghan McCain.
MAGA supporters on X seized on the vote, posting, “AOC’s vote to keep Iron Dome funding alienates her Squad but shows she’s buckling under pressure.” Others noted she was “outflanked” by Tlaib, Omar, and even Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who also voted to cut funding. Progressives expressed betrayal
accusing AOC of being a “foot soldier for Israeli fascism,” and “Surrounded by liberal Zionists like Nadler, I’m not surprised she caved.”
The DSA, where AOC is a prominent member, issued a scathing statement, urging her to oppose all aid to Israel’s “genocidal military.” A July 2025 Rasmussen poll shows 62% of Republicans support Iron Dome funding, while 58% of Democrats oppose additional aid, highlighting the party’s divide.
AOC’s vote may reflect strategic calculus, as speculated by Ron Kampeas in 2021, suggesting Senate ambitions in New York, home to a large Jewish population. Critics like Palestinian-American scholar Steven Salaita called it “cowardice,” arguing it prioritizes career over principle. Trump, on Truth Social, mocked AOC’s “flip-flopping,” saying, “She’s trying to play both sides—pathetic!”
The vote aligns with President Biden’s 2021 commitment to replenish Iron Dome after Hamas clashes, a stance AOC once criticized. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, who secured the 2021 funding, praised AOC’s vote as “pragmatic,” per The Jerusalem Post. The controversy has dented AOC’s progressive cred, with her mayoral odds in NYC slipping to 4/5, per Star Sports, as Zohran Mamdani gains ground.
AOC’s vote to fund Iron Dome shows even the radical left can’t ignore the need to protect allies like Israel from terrorist threats like Hamas. Her break from the Squad exposes their anti-American agenda, aligning with Trump’s call for strong national security. Patriots, this is a win for clarity and strength!
AOC’s betrayal of her socialist Squad proves Trump’s influence is breaking the left’s anti-Israel grip. Her vote, though spineless, supports a key ally against terrorism. Stand with Trump to keep America and its allies safe in 2025!
